Thermostat

Seems to take a while getting up to temperature so thought I'd treat it to a new 82 thermostat. Took the old one out and seems much deeper with a 'float' hole to allow low water down through it, but the new one is shallow and solid.

Anything to worry about the differences?

(Put on the '76 car)

Those excellent pictures show just what you need. Our cars definitely require that longer "foot" type of stat. The little hole with or without a little jiggle-pin thing is not absolutely essential and opinions differ about it.
I had a similar problem to you and replaced my stat last year, now its gets up to temp well and runs at about the quarter mark rock steady.

The jiggle valve is just to allow trapped air to pass through more easily, not as effective on a carbed car as the thermostat plane sits horizontal but more effective on an FI car as it sits the other way (the plane being vertical and with the jiggle valve at the top, air which sits at the top can escape easier).

The technical name for that valve is the jiggle valve. It is only there to allow air to escape the cooling system.
