single speedometer cable routing

My '76 FHC came with a speedo cable running from the dash thru the firewall to a counter box (right by the master cylinder), then from the counter box, a 2nd cable runs down to the transmission.

I removed the counter box and have a new single cable (purchaed through one of the TR7 Vendors).

Does the single speedo cable follow the same route and go through the firewall and then down to the transmission? The new cable seems kinda short to go that route.... I didn't get a chance to put the car on jack stands and check things out from underneath.

Follows basically the same route. You won't really know till you try to fit it as it can be deceiving.

Helpful hint #347: Apply some graphite lubricant to the cable insert prior to installation, avoiding the upper 6" to keep the speedometer head grease free.

Any tricks to this? My cable is 47" and it seems about 6" short. Something doesn't seem right, here.

I have the car up in the air, new cable attached to the speedo, coming out of firewall (between master cylinder and clutch slave) and making a b-line down to the tranny. I see where it is supposed to go into the tranny (haven't removed old one yet - using it as a reference). Just isn't long enough. I've got it so tight and pulling on it, any more I'll pull it out of the speedometer!

Anyone have any ideas/tips? Wrong cable? Am I routing it wrong?? Half tempted to go back to the 2 cable setup!

I believe that with the single cable it runs from the speedo to a hole in the gear box tunnel, near the accelerator, than down the tunnel to the box.

Ah! Terry - thanks for that! Yep, there is a plug to the right of the gas pedal behind the carpet - popped it out and routed the cable that way. Got the slack that I need. Now to go hook it up.

Speedo cable is hooked up and working. That needle really bounces around!

And both the trip and odometer is working fine. I drove it 2 miles yesterday. It REALLY needs carb work.

The more I tinker with the 7, the more I wish I had smaller hands....

One thing I forgot to mention about the cable. In the later cars, such as my TR8 there is clip for the cable near the accelerator pedal to prevent the cable from getting caught in the pedal.

I learned the scary way by forgetting to clip the cable and I experienced a case unwanted acceleration.
