I am looking to buy some relays for my 1976 TR7 2.0 Carb.

What type of relay goes where?

All of them are 5 pole relays, but I am confused on which ones are SPDT or DTSP.

Could some one please tell me which relay goes to what connector?

Also, could I get help on where to buy both of these different types of relays?

Since I didn't receive any help, I assume some people may be confused or unsure.


I decided to look into the matter more and it finally clicked for me.


Here is an SPDT relay:




You can find these all over ebay for cheap, only about $2 each

Notice how 87A is powered normally. Once power is induced into 85, it pulls the switch, now transmitting power to 87.


Here is the mystery relay:



I could not identify the type of this relay!

87A and 87 are normally open, current is not able to flow until 85 is energized.


But... This is a SPST relay:




The only difference between this and the mystery relay, is that this does not have pin 87A.

I can get these relays cheap, $2 each also!

What if I soldered the "87A" wire to 87?

That would create the same exact results as the mystery relay.

Why would I spend $20 on a Lucas relay when I can buy ten of these for only $10?

With only a little modification (soldering one wire) you can save a bit of money.


I looked around on the forums for something like this, and I couldn't find anything, so I apoligize if I am reviving an old topic.

While doing the said soldering you may get the same result but you are requesting the one contact to handle the current load of two lines. Not something I would consider doing as there doesn't seem to be large margin of error built into the wiring from back in the day. Could burn out very quickly.

You will solder right onto the spade that goes into the connector, which does not change the amperage that either wire carries. The only area where you might have a problem is between the switch and 87.

It is a different story if you splice a foot away from spade, using the same wire for a distance. DO NOT DO THAT. The relay, on the other hand, will always be carrying the same amount of amperage.

Most relays are rated around 40 amps, so if you're carrying that load, you are probable going to burn a wire even if you have the standard lucas relay

I think the mystery relay is the one for the starter.

In my car I have two black ones for the head lamps and another blue one, different from the starter, for the AC.

At the moment I am not where my car is so I can't check each diagram on the relays.

I ordered a square relay for the starter from VB but the engine quit after starting. They refunded my money.
