This is a subject that crops up regularly and I wondered if there is any thing new.
The previous owner replaced the original parcel shelf with a fibre glass version.
It looks a bit....erm, home made shall we say. A school project that wouldn't have got very good marks!
I was wondering if there had been any advances on the parcel shelf front in recent years or are we still stuck with fibre glass ones?
Perhaps, they vary in quality?

Just got a GRP one for my new project, luckily I planned to have it recovered.
But I do agree it looks terrible, but a GRP base is always better compared to the cardboard original ones it is recovered.
Sadly it will take a fair few hours to recover properly ...

Mike, they look good if you spray the fibre glass shelf with tan vinyl aerosol paint.

Thanks for your replies.
I thought it could be covered with something like carpeting to improve the appearance but I'd have to get rid of the lumps and bumps first.
I might give the vinyl paint a try first though Chris.

My parcel shelf is still the original cardboard job, similar material to the door cards. It had some sort of flock as original, which was also a bit tired.

I did some reinforcing with more door card material & epoxy glue, which strengthened the thing nicely. I then did a similar flock treatment.

It came out looking pretty much as original, & supports the speakers on each side well. I am quite happy with it.

Beans, can you take a sander to that and smooth it? After that a vinyl paint could finish it off.

That's exactly how mine looks Beans, same colour too.
I'm putting back the original Tan trim that the car was delivered with.
I'd be interested to see what you do with that.
Can it be sanded down without too much difficulty I wonder?

As mentioned in my weblog it will be recovered with vinyl together with all the other panels.
At least I get the same grain on all panels

This is something that I am very interested in as one of my many jobs is to put the parcel shelf back in my FHC. The old tan material came of the old one and there were speaker holes in it. I have patched up the holes. Now I have to cover it. I have some black carpet which looks good and feels nice. The issue comes with the pits. The material will not go down it and look good. Also I only have a limited amount of material. The fiberglass one does look good and I was thinking of trying the vinyl spray. When I say good I mean it would with a bit of work lol.

Slightly related and may give others an idea, but a previous owner of my car covered a board in matching black vinyl which sits flush and looks really good, as well as making a place to hide items below it (and hiding any unsightly sun damage).

Not only cleans it up (flat like a DHC) but functional as well. If you're not hung up on originality a very nice solution.

Just lifts off though, gravity/taper holds it in.
