Distributor wrench on Ebay - it SOLD for £48 !

Just noticed a SnapOn distributor wrench for sale on Ebay. Its the special tool S349 that are hard to find. I already have one.

Does the 7/16ths 1/4 inch drive snap-on socket (with a long extension) fit the 7? I know not all 1/4 drive sockets fit, but the snap-on fits the Sprint's 44D4, 'cos it's a thinner diameter at the top. This wrench seems a bit pricey, if it does.

A socket is no good for undoing the dizzy bolt. I bought one of these from Graham a few months back, fantastic, not cheap but the correct tool for the job. I find it's always best to get the right tool if you can, saves all that struggling & swearing, skinned knuckles & damaged parts.

Oh, must be different for the 7, because I use one on the Sprint engine every time - have been doing since the late mid 80's. You just have to have the right one.

That 44D distributor on the Sprint is narrower and easier to work around. The Delco one on the standard 7 engine is much wider and makes access to the bolts underneath much more awkward. It can be done but is just a pain. Many folks have made their own tools by bending 7/16" ring spanners so its a choice we all make.
Of course, if you go electronic you should only have to do it once!

Oh well, guess that's just tough then. S'pose you could fit a 44D4 to the 7, and get much easyier access (it's not that easy on the sprint, cos the manifold is rather wider). But, the 44D4s being a bit rare, that's no help. Well not that rare: I've got about 3/4 spares collected over the years.

Tim, when you bent the wrench did you heat it up before bending?

Not at all, just did it slowly. It's a short, thin wrench. If I still have it, you're welcome to it.

I bought a few cheap 7/16' spanners & bent one like Tim's then cut one down but finally made a repo S349 which was lent to me by Russ who had an original.

Some chrome steel or similar 10mm dia x 500 mm long
Top handle length 110 mm
Bent 90 degs to a Length of 300 mm
Bent bottom piece 90 degs
Cut Bottom part to allow the 7/16 cut down spanner head to be welded onto the length (including round open spanner piece) so 90 bend is 40 mm in length.

It ends up a U Shape 40 mm long total including spanner head at bottom / 300 mm between top & bottom / 110 mm long at top handle grip .

I think the real fix is to take the buffoon who decided .75" was enough room to get to those bolts and poke him in the eye. Would it have been too much to ask for 1" or 1.25" to get in there?

I think he was in cahoots with the tool maker.
