Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

lost nuts in exhaust !

Postby smoking joe » 19 Jan 2014 13:35

I could not believe this when it happened, changes the
gasket between manifold and exhaust and, new nut fell down one
of the exhaust pipes !

I do not want to have to part the exhaust further down, if possible,
but wondered what the likley risks are by leaving there. Would it
get blown through or by some fluke get drawn back up one starting.

I am considering some kind of small magnet with sides insulated so not the attract the exhaust pipe sides, attached to some wire and hope I can locate the nut.

Any advice much appreciated !!

Can't see any risk of it going back up into the engine and with a bit of luck it might even get blown out of the back, depends on the kind of system you have.
Worst case is an annoying rattle that will remind you to look after your nuts in future.

I would suggest getting a very long mechanical finger.

Put a small powerful round, flat magnet in the grips, then wrap the outside edges with electrical tape. I have a 24" one set up like that which I use to pick up parts that follow Murphy's Law.

I doubt that the nut would come back up, but can do damage to the exhaust system down stream. Plus, it will probably make a heck of a racket.
