I've been going over the spare engine and five speed gearbox I picked up in Vancouver. Much to my surprise the gearbox looks to have been rebuilt; all of the gaskets show a fairly recent silicone gasket sealant that isn't original. The mainshaft splines are perfect, with no wear and there was only a tiny bit of swarf on the drain plug. It goes into all gears nicely. I'm considering using this gearbox when I replace the clutch and fork on my car; embarrassed to say, its still sitting in the garage right where the tow truck dropped it in October.

I don't want to put too much time into this box because its just a spare that I didn't even plan to get. It just sort of happened.[:D] But what simple checks should I do on it to be sure its alright?

Other than end float that Beans has mentioned in another recent post I don't think there is much you can tell other than installing it and trying it in actual driving situation. (other than tearing it apart to look at gear condition.

I recently installed a used box after changing the pump and seals. One seal that seems to be trouble is the small "O" ring that fits into a groove in the case where the selector shaft enters. My parts catalogs show it as not available. I have done two of these boxes and bought the "O" ring at Ace Hardware. One of them sealed perfectly the other is leaking. I'm not sure I bought the same size each time. Problem is that you can't tell if they will leak until you run them. I'm going to try and change my leaker in situ.
