Camshaft sprocket locating pin?

Camshaft sprocket locating pin?

Once again I'm in need of some expert TR7 help.
I mentioned a while ago about my 77 2.0litre TR7 making a tapping noise which I suspected was the timing chain. I have finaly got round to taking the rocker box off and having a look, the first thing I spotted was a bolt in the centre of the camsprocket which is rattling about loose. I believe its called the camshaft sprocket locating pin, it wont tighten up and has clearly been hitting the plate infront of it.
Any ideas if its a common problem and more importantly what the fix is?

Remove the bolt immediately, it should only be fitted when removing the camshaft, to support the cam sprocket.
You're lucky that it didn't come of and ruined your chain
Support bracket should be free from the cam sprocket, as this picture shows ...

So some pillock has left that in after doing some engine work?
Oh dear, that casts serious doubt over the quality of work that has been done!
I did try to remove it but its not for coming out. Now I'm very worried about my engine......

He could have forgotten to remove it after work, happened to me once [:I]
I was Lucky to notice I was missing the nut in my micrometer case, where I always store it, so no harm done.

The nut is the same size thread as the cam bearing caps, I would check they are still present [:0] [xx(]

I will post a pic later but I have spoken to S&S as I cannot get the bolt out and they tell me its part of the cam gear thats come adrift. Looking at the pic of Beans its the center part of the cam sprocket, the threaded bit with the nut on you can see sticking out, its this that is loose.
It seems this should be tight up against the sprocket and the locating tool fastens to it?

Sorry misread your initial post, thought there was a nut + bolt screwed to the support bracket.

The "nut" and "bolt in my picture both are not what the appear to be;
• The bolt is a dowel for centring the sprocket to the camshaft.
• And what looks like a nut isn't treaded but press-fitted to the dowel to keep it in place.

As it should look from behind with the cam shaft removed ...

i just hope I can save the cam or S&S have a good used one as I don't want a repo item on it

Robsport has some new old stock camshafts a while back - they were about £30 & just needed a polish of cams - they may have some left [?]

Not so fast. My recollection is that the nut does not tighten snugly. Take a look at this drawing before you do anything drastic.

On the drawing its 149787 that is loose but its not just the nut, its the whole thing. The plate in front of it has also taken a beating and is now very out of shape. As the dowels only function appears to be to hold the chain assembly on head removal I think I could probably do away with it but I suspect the only way to remove it is going to be to remove the chain and timing gear.

Have a look at the Work Manual Page 86 for more details on the bolt - temp. measure 'cut it off' ?

Looks much the same as the one on my (Sprint) engine)
Bracket is bend a bit, but that shouldn't matter much,
as long as you don't need it to mount the sprocket wheel.
