Wipers won't turn off

Yes, they are rather too enthusiastic. They worked OK (in the sense that they turned on and off) when I got the car, but now they run all the time. I have disconnected the wipers from the stalk, under the dash as a temporary fix.
Do I have some kind of electrical fault? I did install a new wiper stalk, but they worked OK after that for a while.
I guess I'm hoping someone has experienced this themselves.

It might be the park switch in need of cleaning, or renewing....

Thanks for the reply. I'll check that switch.
I took a look at the wiring diagram, and it seems that 1980 models have a wiper delay unit, Lucas 6DA, and 1979 models don't. If I have one, where would it be?
I'm worried I bought the wrong stalk, as mine does not latch in the lowest position, so this must be for cars with no intermittent wipe.

The delay unit is a black box about the size of a packet of cigarettes. If you follow the loom from the wiper stalk at the steering wheel, it will plug into the delay unit under the dash. The delay unit also has a connector to plug in the main loom - if you find that the stalk loom just plugs straight into the main loom connector then you have no delay unit.
The wiper stalk does not latch in the down position - on earlier cars one push down is the single "flick wipe" action; on cars with the delay unit one push down turns the delay wipe action on, another push down will turn it off. In either case the stalk returns to the "off" position.

Thanks for the info. I've been putting off troubleshooting the wipers, but it looks like it's time I faced the Prince of Darknesx in his lair once again.

When mine wouldn't turn off it was because the parking switch actuating finger broke. I had cracked it when I had the rack out to clean it. It's made of copper so I just soldered it. When I took it out again I soldered a little copper strap over the crack to reinforce it. When I put back on the wipers wouldn't turn off. I loosed the wiper motor mount to get at the switch and adjusted it a little one way. Lucked out that it was moved in the right direction. It's worked ever since (5 years).
In an emergency, to stop the wiper action if it stops raining you can disconnect the right connector under the dash by the steering column. If it starts raining reconnect connector till you get home. Then fix.
The only time I've had wiring problems were when I caused them (not Lucas/Delco's fault). So far.[B)]
OK, except for one time my brake lights wouldn't come on by it was just a dirty Lucas brake switch.

Cool, looks like all I had to do was to adjust the parking switch. I also greased everything. The wipers work just fine now. I just need to fix the screenwashers, and everything on this car will be working!
