Funny thing is even though my car was very rusty the tank straps came off easily with an air ratchet.Steve...

Those shiny tank mounting studs are amazing! Most of us have to battle with them being rusted solid so they twist-off with the strap and you have to replace it all. Must be a joy to work on that car.

Definitely takes one element out of the experience. The only bolt that was rusted on the car was the RH rear outer seat mounting bolt. Took me a week to get that out, as I was not going to break it off in the captive nut. As the other seven bolts where like new it was a bit of a conundrum. The rear part of the underside of the car was not just paint but had some kind of a coating on it. The closest thing I could come up with that was similar to reinforce it was the wax oil type stuff that is clearish that I had. The gas tank had previously been removed at some point to get the bung welded in and to be sealed. I don't know if this was done by the first or second owner and if anything was sprayed over the paint or was left the way it was. Was this something BL was experimenting with or did they not undercoat those cars that were sent to the dry part of N/A (it was shipped to Sacramento dealership)? Or (wouldn't put it past BL) was it just missed?

I've got 4 similar lumps of twisted rust in a corner of the garage somewhere. Maybe I'll box frame them on the garage wall with the 7's clutch lever arm, heater matrix and the MX5's con-rod.
