Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

Worst job for me was probably changing the petrol tank the bolts holding the straps were seised solid twisting the straps when I was trying to remove them awkward to get to as well. The water pump was also a nightmare until I made 2 tools to remove it which made life a whole lot easier. One was like an 18 inch Allen key which was a 6 or 8 mm bar which I ground the end to a square that fitted into a 1/4 inch socket so I could put a socket on that elusive front manifold nut and thread the bar between the manifold gap into the socket. The other was like a slide hammer with a piece of box section on the bottom so I used the original imLh threaded bolt to bolt it to the water pump which tapped out easily then ( if anyone interested I'll try to work out how to upload pics of them ) . I also did both window winder mechanisms I remember it being fiddly but not impossible with a few cuts on my arms doesn't help I have very large hands. Have to do the winders all ofer again now as I got hold of 2 doors that are better than mine but are bare so have to transfer everything inc locks window winders and runners quarters etc removing the head to un seise the engine had it's own problems as did removing the engine by myself without a hoist :-/

If it makes you smile it's the right car :-)

Water pump or head off: both a nightmare! Regulators are horrible first time around but by the 3rd pair they become slightly more straightforward. Ed.

Worst job,

On a 7 getting the head off, in fact I never got it off, fitted another engine in the end.

Not found the window regulators worse than any other car.

Got to change the gearbox this weekend (V8) that is never much fun.

Kevin.

Window regulators would not be hard to work on if humans had three or four half size hands.

....real worst job is the alternator on a fiat X 1/9, when you don't know there is an access panel behind the seats.

In winter......on the roadside.

Annoyingly I bought two new window regulators - and fitted them - large hands but not too bad a job. Then I realised I could just have swapped over the regulators - only half of the quadrant is used on each side - so when swapped, the unworn section is used on the other side! Grrrr. I've done a head (on a SAAB 1850) many moons ago - and am dreading having to do the waterpump some day. Pictures of the home-made tools would be very welcome if you manage them 'unicorn' ?

Yep, the head was always a big problem (next time I'm going for Mildred's bolt fix), water pump easy after making the right tool, intake manifold no problem off and on in 15 min...dont that lots of times...don't ask... [B)]

Just remembered- heater pipes and rubber seals to the heater matrix was a pretty bad experience. Taking the dashboard out was bad enough but dismantling the heater box with all those fragile plastic parts and disintegrating sponge and pesky rivets that have to be drilled out so carefully...........

Hi,

Just to add to the list of WOE [:(]

1..... Collars on 5 speed wheel bearings, can be a royal pain in the butt [V] Ok IF you have a press, or your into drilling and cracking ! and the steel is not soft stuff.

2..... Four speed rear hubs can stick like the smelly stuff to a blanket, when removing to change a wheel bearing, even with a hub puller [V]

Cheers John
