Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

Cheers all, I've ordered the electric pump and all the other bits, just having trouble trying to locate the brass blanking plug from somewhere. Does anyone know where I can get one?

I did see one on the net but can't remember what site, and it was £40 + vat, bit expensive for what it is.

Triumph Dolomite Club have them

http://www.dollysprint.com/

If you were closer I could make you one, but the postage etc. would probably be more than the cost of buying one.

Another option is to silver-solder brass plates to the top and bottom of the existing cage that holds the pump...this may be cheaper.

Hi again,
The latest instalment on this saga, as follows, and its not good news.

Removed old fan assemly and fitted smaller fan belt. Fitted the electric water pump(with controller)and new kenlowe fan and connected it all up. Blanked off the hole where the old pump sat, plugged the holes in the inlet manifold and re-routed the heater return to the top hose between header tank and rad. Dropped the sump and found a couple of broken teeth (not all). Fitted new oil filter, all new gaskets, oil, coolant etc. Ran the pump off the battery to circulate the coolant and clear any air.

Then came the moment of truth. Tried firing her up but would not start, not even close. Engine spinning freely but backfiring badly from the exhaust and then she decided to dump about a litre of oil on the floor from around the oil filter bowl.

Is it possible that when the water pump ceased and broke the teeth on the jack shaft it might have thrown the timing out as it drives the dizzy as well? What about the oil? Im losing the will to live here. Any ideas?

It sounds like you haven't seated the oil cannister in the ring.It can hang up on the surface. When you tighten the bolt it feels as if every thing it right, it holds oil fine but when you get oil pressure it will dump it out. The trick is to twist the cannister so it seats into the ring and tighten the bolt. Once it's past the lip you should still be able to turn it in the ring, then tighten up the bolt. I have changed my oil every year for six years with no problem then last year it did it twice to me before I realized what was happening (slow learner) and applied the above technique to get it seated properly.

As far as the backfire I would double check timing marks/rotor position as per manual and recent posts. Try having the engine rotated while you look at the rotor to see if it turns smoothly (no broken teeth). Not sure what it should look like as the teeth are not straight cut.

Im working on it now, drained all the oil out, put new in and replaced filter assembly. It seems to be in there properly but its still chucking oil out from there when I turn her over. Havent managed to get her started, just checking the timing now.

Got her started now, the timing must have jumped when the pump ceased as it all runs off the jack shaft. Fingers crossed.

Have you done the obvious like pick out the old oil O ring seal before putting in the correct new one? They usually come with two of different sizes for different applications.

Yeh its sealed now, no leaks. The timing had jumped way out so we put that right and is now running ok, touch wood. The clutch was jammed where it had been sitting but we freed that.

I let her idle for about 15 minutes to get the temperature up. The electric pump controller is pre set for 85 degrees, (is that ok?). The fan hasnt kicked in yet so I assume its running quite cool. B**** temperature gauge doesnt seem to be working atm though and Ive got to fiddle with the electrics. Fog lights and brake light not working.

That will give me something to do tomorrow. Thanks to everyone for your help especially Stag76, will report back if there are any more disasters. Cheers all.

Well I found the rest of the broken teeth from my water pump spindle and jackshaft while doing an oil change today. Its a good idea to fit a magnetic drain plug to catch any bits floating round the system. Dont buy a real cheap one though as they can break off when tightening leaving the thread in the hole.

Where would you buy such a plug? I know the old Mini / 1100 / 1300 range used to use one as the gearbox used the same oil as the engine. Is it possible to magnetise the standard plug? supercass

Mine has one but I've no idea if it was original. The car was basically stock when I bought it with the only change I can recall/spot is the Koni shocks on the rear. They are/were available from a variety of suppliers although I see Rimmers is out of stock. I didn't know there were cheap and non cheap ones. Although mine only ever has fine metal filings I think they ar4e a good idea for your next parts order/oil change.

It does look a good idea. There is a range of magnetic sump plugs on the bay but I don't know the size, can anyone advise?

I am now officially convinced our boy Chunkychops needs to matriculate into the remedial training course on 'How to Post a Photo'. Is there a local tutor available for his personal instruction?

More importantly, I like the looks of his car. My good friend, Chunkychops, have you considered installing a air ducting panel on your car as may be viewed in my article in The Workshop Manual? It would improve the enhanced deflection of incoming air provided by the front air dam on your car. Without the panel, the deflected air dam flow is dispersed by outflowing thru the open bottom space.

You see, gentle men, an air dam provides two benefits. At higher velocities, ground level air is swept aside. At all speeds the air dam funnels air into the opening to be ducted thru the radiator. It's not there just for looks, an air dam actually has a function. But, the ducted air cannot be allowed to escape, thus enclosing the open area on a TR7 in front and around the radiator is a necessity.

This is the link for the drain plug, its nearly half way down the page, (item 155660). Just don't overtighten.

My dear friend, let's start by examining your photo of the car. Do you see the verbiage on either side of the photo? Please delete that when the photo is transferred from Photobucket to your post. This will leave the photo intact and placed correctly. Note, only delete what you see below. Any others must stay intact.

Thank you.
