What to do?

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

Dan - pm me your details and I'm sure a couple of recent back-issues will be winging their way to your doormat.

Hi Maxwell

sorry for the delay in responding to your post - yep, would love to have a look at a couple of recent back issues of the club magazine - I will pm you my details and no doubt take up a membership.

I have owned my TR7 DHC since 2nd April 1982 - it was first registered 6th May 1981, so it was less than a year old when I bought it. I really wanted to buy a new one at the time but I just couldn't quite make the then asking price of, I think, £5600 ?

I saw my Midas Gold TR advertised in the Manchester Evening News for £4195 and went to have a look. It was a one lady owner car and when I arrived, after the initial tyre kicking etc. she just handed me the keys and said 'have a drive round in it and see how you like it' and went back in the house. How times have changed.

Of course I was hooked then and she probably knew it coz she wouldn't take a penny less than the asking price and was prepared to let me walk away with an offer of £4k.

I still have the receipts she gave me for the deposit and balance and all the original documentation. Looking over the documents it turned out that the car was actually exported initially to the Netherlands and then brought back into the UK almost immediately. If I remember rightly, there was a VAT loophole back in those days whereby you could get a reduced or even nil rate of vat on imported vehicles but I can't remember the exact details. I guess my TR was sold in this way.

I'm also ashamed to say that the last tax disc (which is still stuck on the screen) is 1991 - although I did drive the car from my dads garage up to my new house in about 1996. Current mileage is 43359

Yep, it's definitely about time I got my finger out on this one - only trouble is, I'm part way through the renovation of an old Harley Ironhead which I unearthed languishing in the corner of a customers garage and is currently taking up all of my very limited spare time.

Life's too short !

It's about the journey, not the destination.
