Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

wiring advice ?? pls

Postby pfenlon » 31 Jul 2015 20:23

Going for an MOT tomorrow, all I think is now OK, but USA car without rear fog lights, car is 1980 model but not yet absolutely sure of the build date.
if its before april 80 it doesn't need them, afterwards it does.

I notice each rear lamp cluster has 4 single bulb operations
indicator
stop
side light
reversing light

I could if I had a double filament unit fit the side and brake together and then a fog singly?
has anyone done this mod before on a federal car.
Also my book says the lights are there, along with a red and blue cable to them, but NOT in my boot!

you only need one fog light and one reverse light ... your back end would then look like this

My 1980 USA TR 8 has two fog lights and so does my daughters 1981 UK TR7.
These are suspended by their mounting bolts below the bumper so that their outside edge is in line with the inside edge of the rear light cluster ( see Bill Piggotts book Originality Guide) in it he states " Twin fog lights were fitted to the majority of Solihull built cars. Some however only have one lamp fitted on the offside (he doesn't state whether he is referring to RH or LH drive Cars). Speke and Canley cars can have either two, one or no rear fog lamps, depending on when built and for which market." They are available from Rimmer Bros ( see page 73 of their catalogue) with part No RB 7092 (wipac) or UKC 9199 and are very easy to fit.
Interstingly mine are Lucas and my Daughter's are Cibie.
I hope this helps.

Under uk c&u regs you require a fog lamp if the car is manufactured after april 1979. The fog lamp must not be closer than 100mm to the brake light. Hope this helps.

Gareth Thanks for the regulation details, I was going to fit the Fogs next to the stop tail lamp, Bill Piggots book states that the top outside lamp is a 2 filament unit and the one next to it a reflector is just a reflector but not on my car or 2 others that I looked at today all 4 lamp areas have single filaments.

But your 100mm rules that out!

I have just bought LED's for all my Tailights and will be fitting them next week. I will then take comparative photo's of both my 8 and Megans 7. Hopefully I will be succesful in posting them here. My reason for fitting them is not driven by brightness , but by the huge reduction in current through 35 year old wiring.

As I understand it the 100mm from the stoplamp is correct under c&u regs but the MOT only checks for functionallity(including telltale on switch),so you can pass an MOT but still fall foul of the law. There are mainstream manufacturers cars which contravene this also but they seem immune to most things being newer(?).Steve...
