carburetor gasket design

Postby nick » 25 Jun 2015 16:14

I posted the following in the Sprint section but thought it may get better visibility here. Every time I change this gasket the question comes up.
There is a square gasket between each carb mount. There are also a slots in the gaskets. Rimmers catalog shows gasket installed such that the slot lies near the lower left mount stud and the slot points left. In this position the slot prevents a complete seal between the mount and the carb. Is that the idea? Or what is the slot for and in what position should the gasket be installed?

If it prevents a complete seal then its not much good as a gasket. Any chance of a picture?

Here are a couple of pictures. The first one shows the gasket installed in the same position as the drawing in the Rimmer catalog. You can see the hole under the red arrow. I traced the curved line to show the carb mounting surface. The second shows how it can be installed to eliminate the gap. But my question is what in world is the purpose of that slot? Even if you install it with the slot pointing up you still have very little gasket material to prevent a leak. The repair manual does not address the gasket installation position.

That would make me want to make my own gaskets. Looks like a case of a part for other applications as well and not quite fitting this one.

That gasket looks like it's for the Zenith Stromberg carbie, not the SU

I was just starting to conclude what Cobber said. My Sprint SU setup does not have that notch in the gasket.
In response to another thread, two of the mount bolts have been shortened to avoid interfering with the linkage and body of the carb.

And the correct answer is:
http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-159871
The confusion comes when one looks at Rimmers drawings. They use the same carburetor image (HS6) for all their drawings. The gaskets I have are listed under TR7 inlet manifold fittings. And the correct ones for my application are listed under TR7 Carburetors Components Service Kits and Float Chambers (SU HS6).
I recently ran into another problem with those guys. I ordered a SS exhaust manifold which pictured the part next to a gasket. Both are listed at one price. The part turned up without the gasket. When I questioned them they said the gasket does not come with the part. So I had to order it separately but they sent it free of shipping. What you see is not always what you get.
Appreciate all the responses to clear up my confusion.

Both types of gasket for comparison. Stromberg and SU. Wonder if some gasket sets might have both types in?

As per F1 Spider I'd make my own gaskets. Old school Motor Factors or online ones sell various stuff is sheets. It wasn't very expensive when I last bought some through fleabag.
