ACG97

Postby Chris Turner » 01 Sep 2014 11:10

About 7 years ago I changed the engine in OEV7P my early car, as some of you will know it was making a tapping noise at Billing this year. I stripped the head and found one of the buckets had broken up, I changed it but as usual it was an oiling problem. Instead of stripping it I decided to re build the original engine. After a full rebuild the original engine is back in the car and running sweet.I spent a lot of time on the body work last winter but I am now happy with the cars overall condition.I have been trying to get it back on the road for the 40th anniversary run. The car will be there.

There will be 3 or 4 P reg cars on the run Chris but I think ACG97 will be the oldest. Great news you can now make it.

Hello Chris, could you elaborate on the â€￾tapping noiseâ€￾ issue?

My car has developed, over time, a tapping noise high up in the head. How did you recognize the broken up bucket, could you see cracks in the material?

Thanks in advance!

Ronald

Its a metallic tapping which is at engine speed, sounds a bit like a worn little end bearing but a bit sharper.
The worn bucket had a ring scored around its circumference on one and the top had come off the other.
Easy enough to change but the noise came back again so I assumed there was an oiling problem.
