Broken Caliper

Postby twoboys » 06 Jun 2014 15:26

Despite my best efforts, whilst attempting to bleed the brakes, the bleed screw broke on me whilst trying to loosen it off. Am I in need of a recon caliper? Anyone have any top tips?

Cheese? Really? How on earth does it look like a block of cheese?

Budget for a recon caliper and that is possibly the worst it can get.Buy a new bleed nipple and then try drilling out the remains of the old one. With a good drill and a steady hand it may be possible to remove it.Carefully does it as you do not have to drill to the bottom of the screw as you will damage the seat and luckily the threads stop short of the bottom anyway.Good luck.Steve..

When I fitted the Nissan Skyline/HSV diff the near side bleed nipple in the caliper that came with it was seized. It was obvious I was going to break some if I persisted in trying to get it out.

I spent some time around the wreckers/salvage yards, & found 3 cars with calipers. On each the near side bleed nipple, but not the other side was seized. Probably just coincidence, but a little strange, at 4 out of 4.

Took mine to a brake specialist, & it came back with an oversize brass sleeve, with a smaller diameter screw in it.

It looked like a propriety part, but may be something they lashed up. It might be worth a try looking for such a replacement at a brake specialist.

UPDATE - All is well! A specialist where I work earned legendary status when, after kindly asking him, he brought back my caliper 20 minutes later with the broken bleed nipple removed. A new nipple now sits in its place! Andrew....you're a star :)
