4 speed

Postby Chris Turner » 04 Jun 2014 06:47

I have been trying to find a way to quieten the layshaft bearings in my 4 speed gearbox. Yesterday I went to a local engineering company and asked if they could machine the shaft to allow the fitment of a proper bearing instead of he rollers. They are willing to do thejob for me but I wondered if any one had done it before.
This conversion would also mean that I don't need a dummy layshaft for re assembly.
I know the sensible option would be to use a 5 speed box and axle but the car is absolutely original so I am keeping it 4 speed.

In the Big TR box they machine the layshaft which allows the placement of 2 sets of bearings (4 total). This would seem like a better way than reducing the size of the layshaft.
