Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

head gasket oversight-?

Postby catmanboo » 20 Jan 2014 00:57

when fitting new head gasket (out of a VB gasket set), I just threw it on dry & torqued all bolts.upon adding coolant, some immediately began trickling out under exhaust side.torqued it again, dried it up. car has been sitting for 6 months unfinished, due to death of my body/paint specialist (bro-in-law) last august. while sitting, more leaks from same area. no coolant in crankcase, thankfully! should I have used any type of gasket glue,I wonder, since head & block came back from machine shop with noticeable mill marks on each? sure hope I don't have to pull motor apart again![:(!]

Yes, pull it apart. Get a new HIGH QUALITY head gasket and triple coat it with copper seal head gasket goo.

But first, find yourself a better machine shop to get the head surface clean of all marks/gouges/goof-ups. The same goes for the block. It's hard enough getting a good seal without having to battle bad machine shop milling cutter blades.

You need one like this:

Don't know what machine marks are there but if head is flat you shouldn't need goo but if surfaces aren't right you might.

If the head has been skimmed you may need to drill the angled stud holes slightly larger otherwise the head locks out on the studs before compressing the gasket properly. Simple way to check is fit the head minus gasket and make sure it rests on the block.

I recall doing that,to ensure there wouldn't be any misalignment issues.hope I can rectify leak by re-torquing after more run time, only has about 20 minutes on it.[B)]
