What Brand of Clutch?

It's almost time to tear down the car and deal with my clutch fork problem. I plan to replace the whole thing; fork, pivot, clutch, pressure plate and bearings, because I don't want to do this again for a long long time.

I just read through the forum threads about the right type/wrong type of pressure plate, etc. but can't find a discussion of manufacturers.

An recommendations on clutch component manufacturers? I see Beck Arnley, Borg & Beck, Rhino Pac, Quinton Hazell, AP, Spec and several other brands out there. Any that are especially good, or especially to be avoided? Did I mention, I only want to do this once?

If I may humbly suggest, try calling the good folks at British Parts NW. They are in your neck of the woods and can give you some advice on the brands they stock.

The clutch components I have used over the years came in boxes from Quinton Halzel, Borg & Beck, and if memory serves, LUK. All have performed just fine.

As for the clutch fork, I would be leery of one made on the Aisan continent. Taiwan, tho, would be a better choice. Actually, I would favor a used one from a junk yard that was original Triumph factory made.

I don't know if light weight flywheels are something that is common on TR7s, but it if is, you might consider that. I was very happy with the one I installed on my TR4A, and plan to do it on my TR8 if/when I have to pull the transmission.

In a nearby city ,we take our clutch components to a specialist shop (brake and clutch) and tell them what we've got and what we want. It is more economical, and you support local folks. Turn around time is usually about a week from what I remember. It may be worth a quick search for something equal around your town.

Hi,

Replaced my FHC clutch recently and fitted a Borg And Beck unit, given a nice light pedal ( esp compared to the uprated one in the DHC !! )no judder etc [:)] Personaly would go for a ' known ' name.

Borg & Beck is part of Firstline now, but still a good quality brand. AP of course are another quality manufacturer, but AP's mainstream automotive side was sold to the Delphi brand around 2000 while AP Racing is now owned by Brembo, although it still trades under it's own name. Still, Brembo know a thing or two about friction materials [:)] Since Feb 2013 the UK arm of Quinton Hazell now belongs to Tetrosyl, but again I believe trades under it's own name.

You guys over the pond have probably got some brands we are not so familiar with, like Beck Arnley.

So, like our friends here say, stick to a brand name.

Yes, Tony, Beck Arnley is an importer of what we call 'foreign' car parts. They are priced on the higher end but do tend to source their inventory from better suppliers.

Will be fitting a NOS Quinton Hazel clutch to my Sprint tomorrow. Had it a while, the release bearing is noisy so will replace the whole clutch.

I put in a Borg and Beck after I read they had been bought out by AP. Got it from Moss UK through a Moss dealer in Vancouver, BC. You can get it from British Parts Northwest for $143.96.
