Seems unnecessary, 85000 miles and I've never broken a headlight.

Agree, well over 200.000 kilometres and also no problems so far.

For something to break the headlight glass it would probably have to bounce up off the tarmac at a steep angle into it.

Any debris would hit it at an angle if it did manage to get in there. Pretty safe. Headlight lights in most cars are out in front for all to hit, yet never had one break. Custom expensive molded lenses on the Integra and only time I ever had to change one was when the bulb inside exploded and discoloured the inside. Had to change a few windshields though.

I've had headlights broken from stones flicked up by the car in front, just not on my 7 where they're tucked up behind the bumper and spoiler.

I don't think the risk warrants the work involved. I still have the original headlights with the power of fork handles which are cheap to replace. If they did get trashed I'd uprate to Halogen, still not expensive.

If you feel its important on your car then go ahead and post up the results on the forum afterwards
