Braided SS Clutch Hose

Postby whitenviro » 16 Sep 2013 02:47

I just installed a new slave cylinder and braided clutch hose, after the gear grinding episodes on our road trip. But the hose is quite different than the original style and I'm not happy about the way it fit. I got it from Robsport, but Rimmers carry the same one, with a part number UKC3882GR, for left hand drive cars. The one I have looks just like the picture on Rimmers site and has that part number on it, so it seems to be the correct one.

The new hose has a straight connector on one end and a 90 degree bend connector at the other. The original hose has a U shaped end pipe on one end and a slightly more than 90 degree bend at the other. The old one passed under the brake servo and laid directly against the firewall on its way down to the slave. The connectors on the new one make the hose go over the top of the brake servo, then isn't long enough to follow along the firewall. It has to take a route along the side of the engine near the fuel pump, to make a gentle enough bend for the fitting to go into the slave cylinder.

Am I missing something here? It seems like the hose should have at least a 90 degree bend at each end. I don't like the path it has to take to connect the two cylinders. Plenty of people have made this change, what did you do?

I bought mine from the Wedgeshop and it sounds identical to yours.

Like you, I wasn't 100% pleased by the fitment and wished it could have been about a foot longer, but when compared to the trouble some have had with the plastic hose .....
-it does seem to work well and after two years now, has not given me any trouble.

Originally I wondered if the TR8 hose might take a shorter route , and is simply used for all the applications as it technically does fit the TR7?

Gentlemen- I have posted this in the past and it seems to do the trick.
Use this part at the M/C

Can't say off hand exactly where I got mine from but as I recall the ends were slightly different and like Ron's was a little short but routing it the shortest way possible it does work. Changing oil filter is a little more busy. Seems to be the nature of the beast.

Don:
I did a few searches on here before posting and end up with 6 pages of discussions mentioning braided clutch hoses. None I looked at discussed the fit problem, but I didn't see this prior one until searching for "clutch" and "banjo":

Where did you get that type of banjo connector? I was thinking of putting in a simple 90, but I like that approach better.

Took me a while to find one that would fit.
Seemed Harley's used about the same size but...
So I did find this company

http://godmanhiperformance.com/

I used part #'s
1. 3266 for the banjo
2. 3301SS for the bolt

I found a neat trick for my car when doing the clutch hose - use the old hose and take it to your local pressure hose people - they can make you a hose that will last forever!

Ian; I was already thinking of that. I was planning to go to the hydraulics place today to get the right fittings. I have the hose with me.

[:D]We aim to please!

They can even make up the braided pipe using your original ends to save a few more bucks!
did this on both my 8 and an old Nissan Z I had. Sadly the pipe outlasted the car!

Cheers

The places I went didn't have banjo bolts in the size I needed and the only one who would splice the old ends to braided hose wanted $100 to do it. I was a little disappointed at that, but just bought a 90 degree fitting for each end and now the hose fits much better. I was able to run it under the servo and along the firewall like the original. It will still be a bit in the way during oil changes, but not too bad. Now I have to bleed it again...
