Newtronic Electronic Ignition

My recently purchased TR7 V8 has Newtronic Electronic Ignition fitted. Anybody out there fitted the same unit & still have the original installation instructions/manual. If so a scanned copy would be much appreciated.

A further question for any body able to help. Is the cover of the Newtronic Module removable? Looks like there are a couple of tight fitting push in blanking plugs which may or may not be able to be prised out to uncover fixing screws. See photo. ( Not my unit but a photo copied from the interweb for reference purposes) I've tried poking with a sharp implement but to no avail. Don't want to force the issue & break something.

Why do you want to open it?

As for the wiring;
White wire goes to ignition switch;
Yellow to coil terminal that connects to distributor (remove wire between coil and dizzy);
Blue is earth wire.

Thanks for answer.
Reason for wanting to remove cover is I assume the unit is screwed to the bulkhead & I may want to remove it at some point, to reposition it or clean/paint panel behind it. Not an urgent requirement but I like to be prepared. There are no external fixing screws visible.

Mine was fitted many moons ago, and came with a double sided adhesive foam tape to the back of the unit.

Early ones were screwed on with a couple of self tappers but all the later ones use the double sided tape.

If you dismantle the unit you will need to replace thermal paste between the power transistor and the metal heat sink. I got mine from RS Components - 1805306 Silicone grease, 1.4 W/m K, 20g which cost about 10 quid inc postage

The Pirana/Newtronics units can suffer from bad solder connections (aka dry joints) which can easily be sorted with a few minutes soldering. This turned out to be the problem with mine and I have had reports of three other units suffering form the same issue.

Procedure is as follows:-

1) Remove PCB from black plastic cover

2) Re-solder all the soldered connections with a small soldering iron & suitable solder (with flux)

3) When finished, spray PCB with clear varnish to protect components

4) Reassemble unit applying thermal paste to the metal cased power transistor.
