Flexible carburettor mount gaskets ?

Postby tr7dan » 01 Mar 2017 00:24

Can anyone tell me - should there be a gasket between the flexible mount and the inlet manifold ?

I can't seem to locate one in the BL parts catalogue and surely it isn't just a metal to metal contact with nothing to seal the joint ?

thanks

No gasket, inner ring should do the sealing

Check the condition of the mounts carefully, they tend to crack with age, especially the inside ...

Mine are showing a few defects, small cracks, etc. but I wouldn''t say they are badly perished.

Would you consider these to be useable ?...

They look like they have a few more years of service left  But keep an eye on them all the time.
I have a gut feeling (so no proof) that the damage visible in the picture I posted earlier was caused by the fuel available these days

Make sure to fit the (rubber) mount between airbox and throttle lever mounting.
Better still to replace it with a more solid support, as that will take away much strain from the carburettor mounts themselves.

And add some sealant on the back (manifold side) of the mounts to prevent leaks.

It is also recommended to use large zip ties or jubilee type clip bands around the manifold to the plate between the carbs to remove some of the strain on the rubber sections. It helps prevent the cracks appearing/growing.

Another solution if you have an electric fuel pump is to use a plate to block off the mech fuel pump hole with a stay to support the intake manifold like they use to support the air plenum in a FI car. Not seen it done but it would make for a neater less jury rigged look of zip ties or clips.
