Postby clem2010 » 24 Jan 2016 19:08

Has anybody got any ideas on how to unscrew the pinion locking plug without
to much damage the only way i can see is to knock it round with a punch.

Unfortunately, if you are talking about the thing described as the pinion retaining plug in my old manual Clem, which I assume you are, it tells us to use special tool 18G 1261.

I can't even find a picture or drawing of that, but it does appear that something special was once available.

From memory I think I used heavily modified, heavy duty expanding circlips pliers when I did a couple, about 12 years ago, but that is a very vague memory.

Hi hasbeen thanks for reply
My haynes manual mentions a special tool but like yourself i can not
find any details. The inside of the plug is smooth so making it difficult
for any tool to grip, just have to see if i can tap it round.
Thanks clem

I've not had to pull a rack apart, so I don't know what you'd need to do it with.
But if you could post a pic of the offending part, I'll probably be able to suggest a method of undoing it by drawing on my long and painful years of experience in industrial and automotive engineering.

Hi cobber
Thanks for reply managed to shift it with a small punch with not to much damage
now its out can see that it needs a tool with two prongs that will fit down around
the pinion may see if i can make something up to refit it .
Regards Clem.

Sounds like you need a face pin wrench.
They come in various styles and sizes

That looks like an interesting tool to have. You can also tighten it up using the same technique you used to take it out. We used to do that all the time at IBM when there was no other option. Always better to have the right tool of course.

You can also get them to fit onto a torque wrench, though these are a bit hard to find.
