window mechanism replacement

I removed everything the doors several years ago when I repainted the car, and have been incapacitated until now. Today while I attempted to replace the window and all related parts I have a piece that I can't identify where it goes. It is 4 inches wide and 3 and 1/2 inches talk with a 45 degree bend, and it has two holes 2 and 1/2 inches apart. I have not tried to post pictures yet so hope this description helps.
Thanks,
Gary

It's the backing plate for your side view mirror. It should also have two welded nuts on it.

It is the window stop. Mounts near the top of the door and keeps the window from being rolled up to high. Only fitted on DHCs.

OK, I agree with Peter. It goes inside the door at the top near the fixed window light.
