Front Strut Top Bearings

Postby dursleyman » 27 Jul 2014 15:49

Clay has an article with pictures of how he did them on his site so you might want to look here:-

Clay is using a needle roller type which is quite thin. I got some similar ones from Robsport and I remember them being approx 4-5mm, their instructions are shown next.

However, there is another version that uses a ball bearing arrangement that is thicker and I measure them at about 10mm thick.

I have shown the bearing the "wrong" way up so you can see inside, it would be fitted the other way up.

Looks very similar to the Ford bearing I have used for the last 20 odd years with no problems, adds around 6 or 7 mm to the ride height after the original bearing is removed.

Not if you machine the alloy cones to the right size so those bearings sit inside. I have some pics of mine once i turned them on the lathe. The very thought of modding my car and having to 'compromise' was a no-no [8D]

I used the thin needle bearings on my Spider and haven't really noticed much difference at all. I wonder what the difference is with the thicker version?

Yes, that's the way I did it in dads TR7V8 (with PS also [8D] ), but if I'd do it again I'd settle for a depth of 7.75mm :

I have since install the K-Mac bearing tops and greased the rack. It is like having power steering now.
