I think the designers started when they had mono radio's. By the time the TR7 was available they had stereo radio's. It was easy to install the speakers in the door and why bother to change the dash?

There's no room in my dash for a speaker as it's jam packed with wiring connectors. Don't know if a later model with A/C makes a difference.

maybe the earlier cars had more room??
No space in there on mine either ....

This thread got me thinking, I was sure I had a couple of old style oval speakers in the garage and the dash is apart at the moment.
Here is the result - a perfect fit and ideal if you still have a mono radio.
