Troubleshooting Headlamp Actuators

Postby alphadrex » 09 Jun 2009 20:00

Hello all, I'm having some trouble getting my headlamp actuators to work. They work with a 12 volt connected directly to them, so the motors are fine, and I've developed a plan for checking to see where the problem might be, but my problem is that I don't know the physical location of what I need to check on the car. Here's my list that I need to check along the wiring harness according to the wiring diagram in the Haynes Manual for the 1980 USA model.

1.Circuit Breaker
2.Left Relay Module
3.Right Relay Module
4.Main Light Control Relay

Can anyone tell me the physical location of these on the vehicle and what may be the easiest way to access them? I've never dove into the wiring harness before because the vehicle was passed on to me from my dad. Thanks everyone.

alphadrex,

All the four are located in the back of the glovebox, behind A black plastic cover.

If you are in UK a good reference catalogue etc you can get from Rimmer Bros and if I remember correctly, they will send you a catalogue for free. A good useful guide to your cars parts and reference number etc. You can alternatively access the diagram from the web site.

Hope this helps.

Alphadrex,

Before you start taking the headlamp actuators apart is this really your problem? Have a look at some of the previous postings for headlights - JClays postings give loads of info and wiring diagramms which you will probably find help loads.

Other than that qiute often the headlight problems are down to poor electrical contacts withe connectors under the bonnet(hood) or the earth points or #1 listing, the master light switch becoming dirty and just needing a clean up!

Last point VERY IMPORTANT if you do take the headlights out and all the actuating arms etc (not difficult) take extreme care if powering things up not to get fingers or anything caught in the works because once its going you wont stop it and it will chop off your pinkies!

Take care

Wow. Thank you so much everyone. This is one of the last things I need to get working to get the car on the road and pass inspection. I've been searching everywhere, but this is excellent. It's also still on the old glass fuses, so I'm considering putting in a blade style fusebox. However, this is a project for another time. My dad had done extensive modifications to the wiring on the vehicle, but I believe the actuator wiring is still intact. Thanks again.
