Thanx Joylon[:X].Now I can post pic's I will keep you all posted on my journey into the unknown world of diy dash electric repair. The whole dash is coming out as I will need to follow some wires through the fuse box and to source.I have warning lights that flash randomly and a new fuel gauge/sender that still won't work.I hope you will all be paying attention to my photo diary cuz at some stage it will all have to go back together and some bits are bound to be left over[;)] HELP![:)]

Get stuck in. If you want a job done properly, do it yourself!

Hi Steph,
Shame you were'nt more local or lived in a pub [;)] then i would give you hand.Probaly get most of it done in a couple days, visits to the bar allowing!!!
Take plenty of picture and label things, to be honest you cant get it too wrong, i would also check for a short to earth on that oil pressure light wire, that would cause the light to flicker on.
Good Luck
Cheers John

Hi Steph,

You are removing the dash?

This is one of those jobs that takes patience and there are a couple of hidden screws to watch for. (I have a list and Photo's somewhere, let me know if you want a copy.)

The heater can only be accessed by removing the dash so I urge you to do some maintenance on this whilst working on your wiring. The heater is one of those issues we discuss every now and then on this site because:

1. By now all the foam seals (on the airway shutters) will have rotted away and your heater will not perform as you expect. Go to a fabric shop, upholsterer or similar to buy some soft foam. Easy to cut and glue in.

2. The heater often leaks due to age and this is really why we pull out the dash or just bypass them. There are three things to look at:

- the little rubber seals where the heater pipes meet the heater core. (Cheap little rubber ring things)
- the heater core (Like a tiny radiator)
- the heater pipes (stainless steel replacements are available)

All are available new and you can even order stainless heater pipes (Robsport and S&S) so that you never have another problem with those.

I would recommend you get a spare heater from someone who has already wrecked a car and upgrade this first. This way you install it as soon as the dash comes out and avoid forgeting where things go. Spare heaters are cheap, I am sure someone will give you one for a fiver.

At the minimum, replace those cheap little rubber seals and renew the foam seals. You will thank your self for doing it when you see the trouble others have with old heaters..

regards,

Jolyon

In my woes I had forgotten the heater.Mine kinda works, blows hot fan speed 3 only. The vent direction seems to have no effect. Thanks for the tip I may as well do a full job while I am in there.I can't get started yet as the car is still not ready[:(!].I was promised the mot would be done today and I could collect.surprise surprise not done.I don't think I will ever see my car again[V] FREE THE WORCESTER ONE STEPHS CAR IS INNOCENT,

I have my work cut out.My 'specialist' has given up on the headlights and left them in the raised position so I am gonna have to work them out as well.My car is still not ready [:(!]I was promised Thursday so finished work early to be told when I arrived that the fuel tank now leaks. The tank he has had out twice and poured sealer into[V].He says he will now at last fit the new one I asked him for in the first place. The dash problems remain as 'he is not an auto electrician' If and when I get MY car back I am itching to give it the womans touch and some well deserved TLC.

Forget tank sealant - it's useless! You need a new tank. Get it from T D Fitchett - they make the tanks and sell them on to others who obviously have to add on a profit margin.

I hope your "mechanic" is fitting the new tank free of charge, It's not your problem he decided to bodge it first time round. You should only have to pay for the tank, no labour charge, And also any costs involved in "sealing" the old tank should be taken off the bill.

Thanks for the continued support.I don't wanna be a constant moaner and hope I can help someone else when I have fixed my problems. The tank is gonna cost £100 and the fitting is free. One of 'the specialsits'quirks is he is not a people person. If you look at him the wrong way he goes postal! Getting the labour free on my new tank was a negotiation worthy of Henry Kissenger[:D].I did not wanna push for the tank sealer refund but it should be removed from my bill in a ideal world.I am promised my car for next weekend but with his track record on promises I am not sure[:p].I can then get going on my work so watch this space.

I say we all go round mob handed and sort this poor lil car out.

Violated by the dirty mits of an unsympathetic mechanic - no wonder most of us do the work ourselves. [:(!]
