It is great that there are survivors of a unique example of things done at the factory for product development, here in the colonies lawyers would insist the the car be crushed and never be driven by any other than factory development drivers and NEVER registered for road use. A very uniques approach to stiffen things up, kind of reminds me of a T top Trans Am in my past. I hope it goes to a good home.

All,

I thought the home made vin plate, was not the best thing if a genuine ACT car, also the engine is far from standard TR8 spec.

If anyone is interested it must be a one for a full checking out before purchase?

Suggest beware

If that 'targa' roof does any stiffening - it will just crack the screen! Caveat emptor!!

The one at Sparkford is the factory proytotype and was built to the same spec as the TR8 mechanically. It has the small rear seats and T bar, I think its now painted silver. The one for sale was bought as a bare shell for the owner to build into a competition car for sprints hillclimbs etc, was fitted with a modified V8. I have some pictures somewhere will post them when I find them.

Chris..anybody? So it the T-Bar a factory fitment or aftermarket?

Are there any surviving T-Bar cars other than the one in the Hanes Museum? I used to have a plastic model kit with targa top and Playart did a diecast model TR8 Targa.

Presumably plans must have been quite well advanced to produce a Targa?

Look at the Broadside prototype on the Bullet disc and you'll see the T-Bar was indeed a factory proposal. It never came off of course but four TR7V8's (or TR8's) and one TR7 were prototyped with the T-Bar and a rear seat similar to that later offered by Grinnall. The petrol tank was moved to a unique position underneath somewhere to make room for this seat which must have worked wonders for the handling! Met a chap who lives near here that owned the TR7 4 seater prototype. Sadly it seems like the car was broken up by a subsequent owner who didn't realize what he had.

The T-bar was one of several factory development exercises. Bear in mind that Triumph pioneered the Targa principle with the TR4 Surrey Top, continued with the 4A and 5. During TR6 and TR7 production runs several variations were floated, some at least of which were prototyped. But BL was a hornet's nest, or maybe a viper's, and sh*t tended to float to the top as in most major corporations, let alone one in its death throes.

I'm not aware of any aftermarket offerings as such, in Targas, T-bars or rear seats, except for Grinnall's efforts. However, there were several one-off conversions around in the early 80s which may have been ex-factory escapees or privateer exercises - one at least was cannibalised from a scrapped Stag.

Cheers,

Alec

Even the factory cars used some of the Stag roof parts.
