The myth of cross drilled rotors......

Hi all,

I was doing some research on what rotors to use for my upgraded front brakes and came across this interesting article:

Seems x-drilling is dangerous as well as adding no benefits for braking with today's brake pad materials. Slotting is good for removing debris and water, but little else. Too bad x-drilled rotors look so good.

Some companies offer slotted & dimpled rotors. In effect the rotor faces are only partialy drilled or "dimpled" Gives the appearance of X drilling without the cracking problem. A solution I suppose if you like the look. Personally doesn't do a lot for me.

I just went for a set of slotted for the Rimmer kit. Also working on some solutions to getting more air to the backside of the rotors. In extreme conditions, getting more airflow to the rotor does more than anything to keep em alive. At least from my research.

i just left the shield off the spindle, lots of air...........
completely stock tr7 brake system with sd1 calipers and capri rotors, fantastic brakeing.

That's what I'm going to do also, Tom. I have the Rimmer kit with the Toyota rotors. The dust shield is all but blocking off the back of the rotor. I went a little further and removed the frt air dam. I plan on taking the driving lights off too for track days. I also moved the horns to the outboard section of the wheel opening. Then I took a 3 1/2" holesaw and put a hole in each side of the inner fender towards the bottom and in line with the center of the tire/rim. This section is of no structural importance..just hangs down to catch spray off the tires. Sort of hard to invision by explanation. But..Now the air coming in the tunnel formed by the sheetmetal has no obstruction and will be funneled towards the backside of the rotor.
