At the bottom of the clear cover over the instrument pod is some sticky foam tape. I cleaned off all the goo and dirt on the cover and applied a piece of black paper tape in it's place.

Do I need the foam to keep down squeaks or rattles?

but mostly you need it to keep the instrument panel air tight to keep dirt and moisture out of it.
You should cover it all around.
Now that you are there take several cotton swabs and 90% alcohol and pass them all around the back area on the thin kind of mother board to take out all the dirt making a better connection to the bulbs and the connectors.
But you already knew that .

Better to use lab grade 99.9% propanol that you can get at any pharmacy. In the electronics industry if we clean glass, lenses etc. with anything with higher water content it leaves behind a film. The plastic "motherboard" you mentioned I removed completely and cleaned the exposed copper surfaces with metal cleaner which gets rid of the copper oxide giving minimal resistance to current allowing maximum brightness to the dash lighting and more accurate reading of instruments if the other wire connections are cleaned as well.

Jclay,the best stuff to use is Neoprene, single side sticky foam
tape. It is best not to use foam rubber. Ordinary rubber looses it'd
resilience, & squashes flat in no time.

The neoprene tape is used a lot in boat building, for sealing
hatches that have to be water tight. In Oz, most boat suppliers,
[ship chandlers] carry it in stock, as do rubber supply places.

I used it all through my plastic dash, about 5 years ago, & still no
squeaks. Anywhere that 2 bits of plastic touched each other, I stuck
a bit of this stuff.

I use it on my pop up sun roof, on top of the standard rubber, as
without it they leak.

I get it in 0.2 inch thick by 1/2 inch, & 3/4 inch widths, as it
suits my usage. It also comes in many other sizes. I used to get
stuff that was made in the US, but it now comes from china. Doesn't
everything?

If you can find it, it is great a de-squeaker.

I bought some foam tape in a roll when i changed my scuffed fasia cover,cant quite remember what it was called now, but had enough left over if i ever need to change it again one day , but i bought a roll of fleabay, and just cut of what i needed, and it worked a treat, i removed the remains of what was on there with using a spray called sticky stuff remover, then gave it all a good clean and it all came up like new, the roll of foam tape werent that expensive either.

Yes. In my experience with all my past wedges, that foam you speak of kept the gauge pod from squeeking against the dash. If I remember correctly, I replaced all mine with adhesive-backed foam bought from my local hardware store.

Here we go....found the roll/package. This is what I use.....

"frost-King' vinyl-foam weatherseal. 3/8"w, 3/16"thick,17'long. All weather/all season, in Grey. (they also have black). Says 100% waterproof/weatherproof. Got it at ace hardware for 2.99 + tax. Says its for doors and wndow sealing, but I use it for many things around my shop. Comes in different thicknesses/diameters as well.

Just to bring this subject to life again chaps:

I visited our local Lidl emporium today and picked up some usefull "3M" multi purpose sealing and insulation tape. I thought it would be good to replace the squished tape on the instrument pod and in other place where I found squeeks whilst buzzing round the track on Sunday last.
The tape comes as two X 3.25m lengths which are 5mm deep by 15mm wide - slightly wider than the original but could be cut down or wouldn't do any harm as it is.
It's near enough the right colour too.

All for the pricely sum of £2.99 a box.

will give it a go and let you know how I get on.
