Why is it that when you think you can get away with something a spanner
always gets thrown in to the works?
The Grinnall has had a leaky rad since its been on the road.First i
tried tightening the jubilee clip at the bottom hose(where leak is)
which made it worse!Turns out the braze has gone on the outlet.So being
ever the optimist(having little cash!)i thought i'd bodge it with some
chemical metal.Emptied the rad,flushed it,bodged it!No dice,not having
it!So i looked through my collection of stuff "that might come in handy
one day" to find three TR7 rads and a SD1 rad-8ugger!no good.
Then i thought that seeing as the 'monster'was hibernating for the
foreseeable future that i could nick its rad.Guess what,different inlet/
outlet design,foiled yet again.
My mate,Gary(ngtf)suggested a brazing firm near me,so i gave 'em a call
only to be told they dont do rads.80770x,80770x,80770x!
Finally,at the end of my tether,i find a specialist in Colchester who
reckon they can fix it for about 50 quid,bearing in mind a recon from
Bobsport is £145,seems like the way to go.So tomorrow morning i'll drop
it off and hopefully have it back in the evening to bung it in for the
weekend.

Chemical Metal was never going to work - and big risk it would suddenly come away - dump all the water and overheat the engine before you knew it! Best repaired properly. Hope it goes well! But - why did the leak occur - is the hose too tight/too rigid/too short/unsupported - putting undue strain on the rad connection?

Bad luck mate [:(] We used to solder rads 'back in the day' was always an apprentice's job to clean everthing up, had to be spotless clean, then tin it and solder with plenty of flux (and smoke [xx(] ) using one of those old lumps of metal type soldering irons, always had 2 on the go over a gas flame, AYE WHEN I WAS A LAD !!!![;)]

Sorry the place didn't work out, it was just a chance it would have been ok anyway. Glad you found someone else fairly local. At least it's only a third the cost of a replacement rad!!

Its only really worth doing bodgy repairs if you are absolutely sure that the results of them failing will be both visually and aurally spectacular.

Paul, I have a very good radiator you can have FOC, problem is Im in Sheffield.

Well,a happy ending!Rad was fixed for a tenner,the man would'nt charge
me any more cos he dont think the rad will last another twelve months.
He said he could build me one cheaper outta one of my spare rads for less
than a recon from Bobsport when i needed it.He also makes oil coolers
and fuel tanks-could be handy!

That's good news. It's nice to know that there are still some people out there that can make a dollar without having to wring every last cent out of the punter. Supstitute pounds & pence or euros where required.
