Was a beautiful day yesterday and took advantage of it and painted the headlamp pods and the underside of the bonnet. On the next warm day I'll get the topside of the bonnet painted as well. These were the only items that didn't get painted last fall before the weather got too cold.

Pulled the headlamp surrounds from the parts car yesterday and found only 1 of the 8 washers still attached to the backside of the rubber headlamp surround; not surprising I guess.

What methods have other used to reattach the washers to the rubber? Or what alternate attachement methods have people come up with to attach the surrounds to the headlamp assembly?

Hi Mark,

I have had this problem on my 8, the rust seems to get at the washer and push it off the rubber headlight surround.
I spent some time cleaning up the washer and the rubber and just glued it back on with rubber sulution glue - seems to work better if you make the glue side of the washer a little rough to help make a key.

So far they seem to have stuck reasonably well, also worth cleaning up the screws and putting them back with some copperslip into the threads, to help stop the corrosion.

Thanks Ian. I think I'll look for stainless steel washers. I did notice that a number of the washers were very well corroded.

Mark i had the same problem as you did, and did exactly what Ian did and it worked a treat, ive got the front end of my car off at the mo too, as i need to do some sanding and painting front end sods law ive been at work when its lovely and warm, as ive been waiting for the warmer weather before i started it.

Glue here too. I used JB Weld which is an epoxy. That was in 95 and they haven't fallen off yet. Some of my interior plastic has super glue. If you can't weld it..Glue It! [;)]

If women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

I use a very simple way to hold the headlight surrounds in place. Using a Stanley knife I slice the rubber about 1/8 of an inch from where the washer usually goes. Do not cut it off completely but leave it like a flap. Thread the washer into the flap with a little Super glue. This will seal the flap and the repair is permanent.
