Alarm/immobiliser question?-Solenoid???

Hi guys. Had to call "breakdown" out today as the car wouldn't start. Had started fine from home, left it in shopping centre, came to start it & nothing (not even a click). Recovery company are convinced the alarm is faulty and is setting itself (thus immobilising the car). It was started several times by them by manually bypassing the starter signal wire but then once the car was turned off it wouldn't start again. Now this is a Cobra alarm system which is supposed to go off when the bonnet is lifted (it didn't)or when there is any movement within the car (sensors)which aren't working either. The car has now been left at the alarm place to be looked at tomorrow (it is under warranty). Does anyone have any feedback re these systems so that I can be armed with the info for tomorrow or any other ideas? Cheers guys. Deb x

Sorry Deb [:(] the only feedback I can offer is that my V8 had one fitted when I bought it and it took me all of a month before I ripped it all out completely!

In my experience most alarm systems are a pain in rear end. Even if they do work, does anyone ever take any notice when one's going off? You're probably better of with a well concealed ignition cut out switch. If finances allow I reckon a tracker system is better value than an alarm.

The alarm place is saying that a faulty solenoid may be to blame for this...any info please...

If you have don't here evwen a click that suggest the relay is not possible working so not allowing the solenoid to work part no 520473. If a remember correctly the solenoid engages the drive of the stater motor, which the solenoid is the bit with the wire too. The starter relay is a differnet one then the rest of the relays in the glove box area.

If you look New member Zoe is having problem with the starter relay part no UKC 7219 £12.95 @ James Paddocks

On ebay there a recon starter motor for £65

Jim, I just read Zoe's "relays" thread..sounds pretty much same problem. Will read through again & try to get my head round it. I am sure the solenoid amp was checked by recovery guy last night as he said there was "no signal to the starter signal wire". He thought the immobiliser was to blame (breaking the circuit)but apparently this isn't the case(alarm has been checked by auto electrician today and problem occurred when alarm was not connected). Hi Debs
IF there is no power being fed to the starter solenoid as the recovery guy says then the relay as in Zoe case may be the problem, but a faulty solenoid can cause the relay to fail, so POSS both required. The relay sits in the fuse box on the side, can normaly be felt or heard to click when starter operated, if clicks this means the switch side of relay ok not nec the contacts inside which may be burnt.Caused by a faulty solenoid or high resistance somewhere in this side of the circuit.Starter held in by 3 bolts under the exhaust manifold, not the worse job in the world but can be messy, a lot of oil and crud finds its way down there.
May of cause just be a loose wire on the solenoid itself, looks like your other half may get his hands dirty!
Cheers John
