Alternative relays

Postby Philip » 22 Feb 2009 12:59

Usual headlamp problem, right hand stayed down so swapped flash relay for run-stop relay. Now both headlamps work but no flash. Does anyone know of a modern, more available relay that I could use in place of the Lucas one ?

Hi Philip,

Try using the horn relay, this does not use all the internal contacts that the headlamp relays do.

As for more modern replacements, have a look down your local motor factors, I found plenty with the same pin and contact configuration they just have a smaller square casing rather than the round Lucas one. Inexpensive too!

Just to say I got two relays today as "spares" from my local motor factors- "original" Lucas ones could be ordered at £21.?? each or the stock new "square" ones at £ 3.??. Was told "Lucas" have split into so many different companies that the name doesn't matter 'cuz they all do the same thing. £11.00 today for 2 relays and 30 various glass fuses.[:)] Deb x

Yep absolutely Deb. I had all these problems with my 2 litre as well so I replaced the ign relay with a modern solid state counterpart.

Same goes for the ludicrous original flasher relays for the indicators - absolute trash and a new one solid state one is cheaper!

Did the same some 20 years ago, only used two since then [;)]
But always good to have them on board. Don't put them in the boot though, you might get wet retrieving them [:I]

Deb, check the fuses fit before you need them in an emergency. The standard modern glass fuses as sold in Halfrauds are too long to fit in the carrier.
