Odometer

Postby Last TR » 01 Feb 2009 21:45

My recently acquired 1980 TR8 lives in another state, slightly warmer, where I visit a couple times a year. I'm trying get some thoughts on sorting out a few issues before I go to visit her in the spring. The speedometer works okay, though maybe a little wavery; the odometer doesn't seem to work at all. I'm assuming that it's probably more than a cable, though I do seem to recall a similar condition with another car that was cured by a new cable. Anybody have any experience with this? If the speedo has to come out for repair, how big a chore is it? Thanks.

Taking the speedometer out and putting a new/renovated one in is a weekend job - for my personal lazy pace...
Not complicated at all, just a lot of plastic, screws and cabling involved. My guess is that one of the plastic
cogwheels in the speedo have been butchered so the speedo cable now only operates the speedometer itself.
I've seen it happen before on Triumphs...

PS
Did you get in contact with Randy Kimpton?

That doesn't sound too bad. But from what I see in the catalogs, I need to get to the car and determine whether I have cable or pushbutton reset before I try to find a replacement. Thanks.

Is Randy the other Alaskan TR8 guy that you were going to try to put me in touch with?

I'm sure you've got a cable reset speedometer unit. It was only the very last ones that got the pushbutton version.
You probably have the left one, TKC5046: the 'Federal' 80mph. The question now is what scale you want/can get,
TKC240: 140mph even numbers or TKC4568: 130mph odd numbers. It doesn't really matter, they are the same internally.

As for Randy: Yes. You'll find his phone number in your local directory...

Odd,

That's great. I assume there is no difference between the TR7 and TR8 speedometer? I have found the early style listed in a catalog or two, and was surprised to find that a 1980 TR8 was considered "early" in the catalog. Thanks for all of your help.
