So our beloeved TR7's always get a bad wrap in the press and often referred to as ugly due to the wedge shape.

One of the cars i've always thought looked most like the TR7 was the Fiat x1/9 so why is it that TR's are slated and these are dubbed as "one of the prettiest cars ever made???" [:(!]

They really are quite similar,the TR and the x1/9,so i guess it's down
to size.Small is beautiful?The only real difference that i can see as
an improvement over the TR is the Fiat's mid engine set up,but have
you ever tried to give one of these a full service!The Targa top is a
nice touch,would've worked well on our wedges if BL had enough money
to offer it!The TR is more comfortable to drive, and safer imho!
Having said all that,i can see it's charm,but it's not aggressive
enough for me-one for the gay hairdresser?

Personally, I always found hard top TR7 better looking than the X1/9 (though, I like both cars). But there is no accounting for taste. [;)]

It is difficult to change a common perception in the herds of ignorant public. Once a car gets a bad rep, it is virtually impossible to get rid of it. Whenever you think of a car that you do not often see, you resort back to your memory of what you might have read about it and if what you read is not positive, you will tend to remember that. And lets face it, there has been a lot of negative information (wrong and right) written about our beloved wedges.

If anything, I am finding that most new car enthusiasts do not know TR7s. And that is good, because looking at the TR7 with untainted mind, they tend to like it a lot!

that sketch looks suspiciously like something Harris Mann had done

Its not about being a wedge, but I think it's a design that can go one way or another I guess. Apart from our TR's there are some legendary wedge cars that are uber-sexy such as:

Hi Wayne, great debate going here, i like the Fiat, but wouldnt swap my TR for anything ok ok a Porsche 911 Carrera i mite do, but then id rather have both, its funny that some quaters feel how they do about our 7, lets face it its had bad press from day one, because of poor build quality, and at a time when strikes at BL were rife, but what people who gave this cars stick forget is that there are so many outlets S+S. Robsport, & Rimmers to name but a few dedicated to helping all of us to kep our cars on the road, and that wouldnt happen if there wasnt the demand, the Fiat x/19 carried on i believe till 1989 where they then had the gran finalie,then we had the MR2 which again another car not to dissimaler shape, a cracking car i think, and that was mid engined just like the x/19, so maybe the TR7 was the shape of good things to come !!, and to all of us that is so true.

The Elite (and its sister car the Eclat) are generally not well regarded by the Lotus crowd, particularly here in the US. In my experience, in general, Lotus people feel the same way about the Elite/Eclat as Triumph people (the "traditional" TR crowd) feel about the TR7.

I used to have a Series 2 Esprit. Out of all of the cars that I have sold, it is the only one that I truly regret selling.

Beans you arnt wrong there these are beautilful cars, and ever since i saw it in the Spy Who Loved me, i was also smitten, they look great in any colour and those wheels wow!!

It's the swage. As wedgetarians we accept it but do we really think it looks that good? It should have been made to look like a rear cooling inlet like the Mustang.

That was actually a quite good idea - but they should have used the angle of the rear door gap... IMHO

It's just a quick mock up. The beefed up sills on Wayne's car give it a similar effect.

Interestingly the TVR350i is a re-working of the TR8 by TVR. I believe a deal was done between Triumph and TVR when it was announced TR production was to end. TVR were given a TR8 to reverse engineer and the result was the virtually identical 350i. But don't quote me as I've been unable to find definite confirmation. It all makes sense though having read David Knowles research regarding the possible DeLorean TR8.

With regards to the swage line, a TR7 looks distincly odd without it. But it is a shame Donald Stokes didn't like Harris Mann's original swage as I think it was superior.
