Alternative Starter Relays

Postby Rich in Vancouver » 12 Jan 2009 15:44

Hi all.
I have spent a very frustrating weekend going through my box of old Lucas relays trying to find one that will function correctly for my starter. As a last resort I took one by my local auto parts store to see what they could match up. I came away with a Bosch 30A 5-terminal relay that looked right but didn't do the job.
Does anyone have a part number for a Bosch relay (or something that a NAPA parts guy can understand)that is suitable for the TR7 starter circuit? I need something that my parts store can understand.

Thanks!
Rich

WOW! I just found the problem that had had me going all weekend, and it has reminded me that it's a mistake to just ASSume that a component is at fault without carrying out the proper troubleshooting procedure.
It turns out that the source of my intermittent starter failure was not the relay as I had suspected but some mickey-mouse wiring repairs by a previous owner, Mr. Scotchlock. This owner didn't like to make proper electrical connections and relied on Scotchlock connectors, which join two wires by clamping the two together and make a connection by cutting the insulation. Of course, this weakens the wires and becomes a failure waiting to happen. I had previously found failed Scotchlocks on the taillight wiring and found no fewer than 5 on the wire going to the ignition coil. This time I discovered 3 on the red/white wire leading from the ignition switch to the starter relay via the interlock module (strange thing that)
When I troublshooted (troubleshot?) the circuit with a test light the problem revealed itself quickly and by removing the Scotchlocks and repairing the damaged wires the problem was solved and I now have a car that starts...every time I turn the key.

Cheers,
Rich

BTW: MY apologies to the late Mr. Jos. Lucas for the names I called him [:I] , and brickbats to Mr. Scotchlock, whoever he may be![:(!]

I've got a Bosch 0332015001 in the car.
The first they sold me (sorry forgot the number) burned the starter motor [B)] ... which they replaced under warranty

Thanks for that number Beans.
The only Bosch 5-pin relay that my local shop had was a 0 332 019 150 which triggered the starter when it was plugged in. That may have been the same as your first one.

Cheers,
Rich

I went a more expensive route than you did Rich. I assumed a bad starter (it would crank a few turns then just clicking.) I replaced with a gear reduction starter with the same results. I pulled the starter relay and recleaned the connection to the socket it plugs into. Worked fine ever since. Equivalent to your wiring problem but because I had cleaned the socket when I had the dash apart I assumed that it couldn't be a problem so immediately thought it was the starter. At least I now have an extra starter if the new one ever gives up the ghost.

Good to have a part # for a locally available starter relay. We need to put that in the part substitution list.

Particularly as they sell for $5.00!

I installed a gear reduction starter on my car about a year ago.
What a PITA of a job!

Now here's a nice side benefit. It seems that my radio, which hasn't worked for the last 6 months, has decided to work again following my wiring battle. [:D] Must have been those darn Scotchlocks!

Cheers,
Rich

I've got one of those in my radio connections and one of my speakers don't work. I'm sure that's it. Will confirm when I pull the carpet to waxoil the sills when the weathers a little warmer.
