Overhauling brake calipers ?

Postby Dave Dyer » 07 Jan 2009 08:08

Hi All,

I've bought some brake caliper seal kits, I'm about to fit them and I'm wondering do I split the caliper into 2 halves or fit them into the caliper as it is, which looks like an impossible task!!!

If anyone else has done it and can offer any advice, that would be greatly accepted.

Thanks, Dave

Hi peter,

Thanks for the link to the info, its quite well laid out.

I can see that splitting the caliper would make it much easier to do the job, its just I'm sure I heard many years ago that you should never split a brake caliper, but it was a long time ago so a its a bit hazy!!

Dave

It is splitting infinitives you should try to always avoid. [:D]

The kit should include any new seals you will need including the O rings if any are required for the fluid channel joins but you can get the O rings from a specialist fastener store. Just make sure the surfaces are clean & don't mix up the halves when reassembling.

Here's some more info of a generic nature:

I am doing my own calipers this weekend, after which I shall be an expert.

Thanks again Peter for more very useful info and something else I hadn't thought about, painting the caliper itself, it would be easier to do with it all stripped down! (I've got to get some paint now!)

I remember now....a chap at work split his caliper and everyone told him how dangerous it was, so he got some new bolts and asked Lockheed what torque setting they were, they told him to do the bolts up and stop just before they snapped!!!!!????

Anyway, I'm going to go down that route (splitting the caliper) and as you say be methodical on rebuild and everything should be OK. I didn't get the O rings in the kit, so I'll need to track some down.

Thanks again, Dave

I just split one of mine because of a stuck piston and scribed where the bolts were. When i tightened them up, I tightened them up slightly past where I marked them.

I got my new EBC Yellow Stuff brake pads today. They give off a strange rubbery smell. I might have to get some yellow brake paint to match. I probably should have gone with red but I'll see how these go first.

I found it quite easy to overhaul the calipers with out splitting them. Just need compressed air, block of wood to "catch" the piston and something scrunched up to block most of the air coming out of "other" air/fluid hole. C-clamps to support wood etc. No sense splitting them and doing extra work for no return. Your experience may vary.
