prototype development car

Postby birminghamtr7 » 30 Dec 2008 11:04

one for chris i think. i was made aware earlier in the year of a tr7 developement car earlier in the year and now of its location and certain information,
it was bought by one of the engineers when line closed the most interesting part being the light pods which are abs ( plastic ) i believe from my source this pods were on the verge of going into production when closure took place and he only aware of 10 pairs being moulded. the car is a fixed head, low mileage but been stored outside, lhd, fuel injection, power steering and air con. im led to believe he would take 250 - 300 do you think its worth a punt bearing it may have some more unusual bits and history. next problem, would be how to disguise it from missus. thinkl i may pop along this week sometime just to tease myself...

With power steering it would suggest that this is a TR8 rather than a TR7. Well worth rescuing by the sounds of it.

Buy the car and save until you have the time to restore i. It sounds very interesting, there are quite a few unique cars in garages near to the old Triumph factories.

Birm-
To find an early TR7V8 prototype that is a fixed head, LHD and fuel injected is really exciting. Here in the US we did not have any fuel injected TR7V8 or TR8 coupes. To get a feel for the car as to what it was inside the glove box on the lid should be the tyre information sticker/plate. On the lower left there should be either TR7V8 or TR8. Heck you could have BulletV8 or something one-off. The other is if the car has a big gas cap of small. The early coupes in the ACN series, for example ACN00008 are pre-February/March 1977had a big gas cap. The small gas cap cars example ACN01033 would be post February/March 1977. I hope is a different VIN number of an interesting UK registration to add to some of the early cars.

You are right about the plastic light pods. The Untold Story book says they were a planned change to fix the corrosion problem. It describes the plastic pods as being "just about production ready" so that alone makes it a unique car.

It seems to me that the TR7/8 is lacking a caretaker. The Triumph Sports Six Club has several Herald chassis based cars it keeps at their HQ & Canleys have the Spitfire Quasimodo but it seems like it is up to the individual enthusiasts to look after the heritage of the TR7/8 cars.

When you get it? (you will if you go out your way to see it), make sure you post some pictures.
