TR7 in "light blue?"

Postby Debpazvin » 29 Dec 2008 18:42

An oldish guy stopped me the other day as I got out of my 7 and said a relative had a "light blue" 7 which had been stored in his garage "for years" & no longer wanted it. He's gonna drop by with the details so I can go & see it. Can anyone tell me if any were originally done in light blue(I have only ever seen dark or metallic blue) and if not, can I find out what the original colour was from the VIN number (if he hasn't got any previous MOT paperwork)? Actually, this is probably the easy part, I've got to get it past hubby next. Sorry don't know what year it is at present.
Thanks. Deb x

Debs,
Aqua Blue which is light metallic comes to mind Code JCG.
Be interested in further info if you take all the vin plate numbers that will be a good starter.
R u both still ok for the 10th Jan at the plough.

I've heard this story before. Let me hazard a guess as to what the relative who no longer wants the car will do once an interested party shows up... this car will suddenly become the best TR7 on the face of the earth, and they couldn't possibly let it go for less than $5,000!

I think that's the engine on the floor over there, and most of the parts are in these boxes somewhere... Oh and never mind the rodents living in the garage, the snakes keep them out of the cars.

Good luck but don't get your hopes up!

Deb-
If it is a coupe 1977 to 1978 there was astral blue metallic and 1978 to 1979/80 tahiti blue that can have a light blue look to it especially when faded. Early coupe 1975 to 1976 also came in french blue too. Convertables came in Persian Aqua 1980 and 1981 and Pagent Blue 1979 late and 1980 which like other blues can be light when faded. To know the real color you need the paint code on the door.

Great start...know what Tom means tho- the guy had had a few as well.. One guy turned up last summer (a total stranger), dropped me off a TR7 book & claimed he had a whole car in bits in his loft..then when I phoned him for something (with money ready)he never got back to me. Talk about let down, but I live in hope....(but I know where he lives now HA HA...)

It will probably be Pageant if its a FHC and Persian Aqua if its a DHC, both a bit lighter than Tahiti and more plentiful than the others. Astral was used on less than 10 UK spec cars and its darker than Persian Aqua.Image
The above car is Tahiti.

To add fuel to the blue fire, I recently swapped over my engine, drive train and refurbished interior from my rusty red 1980 DHC into another 1980 DHC doner car with the paint code JMA.

I have seen it referred to as both pageant blue and persian aqua on different web sites. One even saying that JMA was a typo for JNA (pageant blue) by the factory. It's iffy, but on some web sites the colour looks closer to persain aqua.

It's a North American car, VIN: TCT 114677 UMF
Manu Date: Aug 1979
Paint: JMA Trim: CAAA

Any insight?

The paint code is definately JMA stamped on the drivers door number plate. Being the original paint (28 years old), it certainly doesn't look metallic; however; after a good compound rub and polish it came out pretty good.

Due to it's almost baby blue like colour, I tend to think it may be persian aqua metallic. One paint manufacturer out of Quebec (Roberts) offers it as a one step paint/finish not needing a clear coat. A blending agent is recommended. I just want to be sure of my actual colour prior to ordering any product.
