Was there ever a british Racing Green TR7??

Postby 92rrrandall » 23 Dec 2008 17:00

I have a TR8 in the dark green metalic. Was thinking about changing the color to BGR (solid green with no metal flakes). Did they ever make a TR7 in BRG?? What color would the decals be if they made that color??

Randall, yes BRG in early cars. Code i think was HAA. Many of the greens came with either black or gold decals.

No, the closest to Britisg Racing Green is Brooklands green, both solid paints and not metallic. I do think through the years a lot of the brroklands green and other cars have been painted British Racing Green.

OK... now I have a paint code for it. I should have google searched it. Here are some photos of various Triumph colors The Brooklands green is lighter and code HAE.

Randell,

Looking at the two colour my preference is brooklands green if that helps.

Like you say it's slighting lighter / brighter.

My best TR colur is Triton Green, this is very bright.

I have always wondered what colour BRG really is.

On the grid for an Improved Production sports car race, in Sydney,
in 1963 we had 4 cars around each other. My Morgan, an MG A twin
cam, a Turner, & a Lotus Super 7. All were painted in British Racing
Green, by their british makers. Just one problem, none of them were
the same colour.

A couple of rows back there was a Sprite, which was another tone of
BRG, this time an Oz made version.

Would the "REAL" BRG please stand up.

I used to own a 1977 Brooklands Green car (PDA818R), the decals were silver, I owned it from September 1984 until September 1985.

Apparently there is a color system called RGB(red blue green). British racing green would be green only, with no red or blue. Apparently you vary the darkness or lightness by changing the value of green. So it would be like 0-100-0 on the RGB system. 0-50-0 would be darker, 0-200-0 would be lighter green. You could just pick the lightness or darkness by varying the green number.

I always end up over engineering everything.

Racing car colors by country, Section 3.2

<b>RGB</b> (red, blue, green) are the three basic colors of <b>LIGHT</b>, all of the other colors of <b>LIGHT</b> can be made combining these three wavelengths. It must also be remembered that each color of light also exists as a single separate wavelength.

<b>RBY</b> (red, blue, yellow) are the three basic colors of <b>PIGMENT</b>. All the other colors of <b>PIGMENT</b> are made from these basic colors. They are also referred to as <b>ADDITIVE</b> colors.

<b>CMYK</b> (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) are the four colors used in color lithography, photographic dye-transfer process and color photographic printing. They are also referred to as <b>SUBTRACTIVE</b> colors.

Apparently this is a controversial topic. But I have seen people use early 2000 or so Miata as a relatively authentic and easy to duplicate “BRGâ€￾ color.

Johnboy is correct. Some of the early cars were painted BRG.

I picked up one of these in my purchase of a job lot of 5 FHCs. I was told that it originally was a South African car that was privately imported to Australia.

It had the early wide mouth fuel neck, hand held extendible map reading lamp and overhead cabin light.

This example had been inexpertly converted to SD1 running gear. The floor pan was badly split around the rear suspension pick ups.

Actually there is no real British Racing Green.
In the early days of motorsport the cars raced in the colours of there country;<ul><li> England - Dark Green;</li>
<li> Italy - Red;</li>
<li> Germany - Silver;</li>
<li> Netherlands - Orange;</li>
<li> Belgium - Yellow;</li>
<li> and so on ...</li></ul>But there never was one particular colour for a country, more a "colour range".
The colour most people nowadays associate with British Racing green is the colour as used on the Blower Bentleys in the late 20's early 30's. That colour was actually Brunswick Green ...

But there are some variations on the theme though [:D] ...

So as long as it is dark(ish) green ...

There is a picture of a 79 TR8 in original Brooklands green with silver decals still in original unrestored condition to get an idea of Triumph's colour scheme in my photos.

I just looked at my well tattered TRF catalog. It indeed shows HAA as the code for BRG but for 1975 only. Charles catalog appears to be somewhat copied from a factory catalog so I would trust it to be correct.
I agree there are many variations of what is considered BRG. It gets debated quite a lot everytime the subject comes up. When I did the MGB, I wanted to duplicate the color of my Dads 67 AH 3000 that he bought new. PPG offered an offset code which turned out to be 69 Subaru Forest Green. I did a TR4 for a buddy of mine and he used a Jag version that is much darker. It's all good![:D]
