A Question On My Mind.

I have been cleaning up the area around the horn while the light pods where up. It looked like the metal had a spotty surface rust. I rubbed it with a rag with a little Metalready on it and just took off some dirt. The rusty look comes from the brownish coating that is sprayed over the front frame parts. It is a little waxy in texture. It appears to be factory applied not after market from it's even application through out the front end.

My question is: I would like to apply a coating of Waxoil (waxoil type coating). I don't want to use undercoating (which I have in the wheel wells and under car from front to rear wheel wells to handle splash up from road) as it would be too hard to remove in the future as it drys out and starts to crack. I know waxoil is good to use in areas like sills and trunk lower wells to handle splash up. Is it a good solution to a more open area like the front end which doesn't get direct (hard) splash up but lots of indirect spray from ahead of car? Or is it too easily washed away? Is there another product that would have similar spray on characeristics but not the sticky feel of Waxoil and hence less likely to have dirt stick to it?

I used a product called SW 2 Protective Oil in this area. It is very viscous and will penetrate cracks and channels. It drys to form a water resistant thin film with a satin finish.

It is too early to tell how well it stands up over time, but other people I know have recommended it as good for this type of application.

A number of MG friends recommened Penetrol http://www.flood.com/flood/Products/PaintAdditives/Penetrol+Interior+Prod+Page.htm

They use Penetrol in the same application as Waxoil.

Looks like SW2 would fit the bill but it looks like they are Oz/Nz only. Shipping to Canada would be expensive no doubt if we could even get it into the country. Apparently it's getting harder to get chemicals into the country (unless we make the poisons ourselves.)

The rules don't have to make sense. Eg. It's illegal (to dangerous) to ship laptop batteries by Canada Post trucks but OK to ship them on an airplane at 30,000 feet.[:p]

Don't know if Flood product would have the staying power I'm looking for but Might give it a try to test it.
