windscreen scratch - help!

Postby David Price » 13 Dec 2008 16:56

Well, I've just collected my mint 25k mile from new TR7 FHC, drove it 150 miles in the pouring rain - after it had spent most of the past 25 years in storage! It ran beautifully - didn't miss a beat, except...

...about 100 yards from my house, around midnight and in the pouring rain, the driver's side wiper fell off!

This off course meant the driver's side wiper arm ploughed a nice furrow into the windscreen - result being a big scratch along the arc of the wiper arm!

I am wondering if there is such as thing as 'windscreen paste' which can 'cut' out this scratch, just as T-cut can take marks out of the lacquer? Any suggestions much appreciated!

David,

The only hope is try one of the emergency windscreen companies to see if they can fill / polish it out. If you have a classic insurance the repair is usualy free but if the windscreen replaced theres usaully a one of payment. So check your cover to check before you sent off.

Hi David.

Frost markets a product that removes scratches from windscreens. I don't know anyone that's used it though. A couple of other firms sell something similar. I suppose it depends how deep the scratch is.

You're not the first 7 owner to have this happen. If you have the original fittings holding the wiper blade assembly on the arm, ensure that the sprung metal strip has enough tension to keep the pin in place, otherwise it'll just pull free again.

in most cases light scratches on windsheilds can be buffed/polished out ....problem is usually it also blurrs vision on the area repaired...which could be a real pain when in your line of sight [;)]

-nb only ever polish windsheilds, - as side glass is tempered and will explode with the heat of a buffer wheel.....

I have used a windshield polishing compound and a thick felt buffer that fits on your drill on my Spitfire windshields. It will take out wiper marks from dirty/hard rubber wipers but if you can feel the scratch it's too deep. The polishing compound is a ceramic coloured powder that you mix with water. The felt buffer is expensive (or mine was). The job is dirty as the gritty compound runs off, you would want to tape off the bottom of windshield. Sounds like your scratch is too deep so your choices are put up with it or replace windshield.

When I lost the tip of my wiper blade and it started to walk off the arm I stopped immediately and disconnected the connector under the steering wheel to disable it and drove through the light rain to the pig roast I was going to. 100 yards from the house would be tempting to continue on but may be fatal.

I always have black electrical masking tape around the wiper connections to ensure this well known TR7 problem never occurs.
