Wedge Film Coverage

Postby tr8 » 09 Dec 2008 14:49

There are a bunch of Wedge films around, just very difficult (so far impossible) to get.

" Buffum and Company" is about the 1977 season of Buffum racing made by British Leyland, one hour long.

"Road Racing's White Wave" film made by John Dugdale, US National publicity manager for Triumph. It is about the group 44 team.

"Rally Racing Fever" which is all about the 1976 racing season of John Buffum

"Success By Design" a film mentionned in Mike Cook's book 'Triumphs In America', which has a segment about the 1976 SCCA championship run of the Group 44 TR7 and the Huffaker Engineering TR7 driven by Lee Mueller.

If anyone has a lead on any of these I would love to hear about it.
There is also ton of footage of Canadian Rallies (Buffum rallied half the time in Canada)...how about the WRC race in Montreal in 1978 in think...there has got to be coverage by CBC, Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

There must also be a bunch of US coverages too. I have some grainy recordings with Tullius commentating on road races.

There are a couple of commercial rally films with bits of North American rally (wedge type)...

Wow thats great! Thanks for the info.

Its funny you post this....I was gonna start a thread asking 'what movies/shows have you seen a wedge in?'

I can think of two (in the states) Starsky & Hutch (opening song, FHC in backround) & Dallas. I believe a woman drove a white DHC in the show.

Hey windy, if you do a search, you'll find we did that topic a while back. Lots of info on Wedges on celluloid. Good stuff!

i'm sure john clancy said that british heritage have some of these films but will not release them, i have a video about triumphs in america which has some snippets of the american racing season and a couple of adverts that i've never seen anywhere else. i also have a video that has john buffan winning a rallysprint in a north american quarry.

they probably are copyrighted but i'll see if i can upload them on utube and see what happens..

Don't for Gawd's sake upload those John. BMIHT do own the copyrights and they do take legal action where copyright breaches occur.

However, the good news is 'Triumph A Sporting Success' has been issued. It's in Motorfilms Quarterly No. 18, they just got the title of the film wrong... http://www.motorfilms.com/videos.php?id=133

Other DVD's available with rallying wedges are as follows...
Rallymaster: The secrets of rally driving by the Flying Finns (this is the one with John Buffum winning a Canadian Rallysprint in his TR8)

A Little Bit Sideways & Coup de Grace (1978 Manx amongst other 78/79 rallies but this footage mostly also appears in Triumph A Sporting Success)

Tale of Three Rallies - 1979 San Remo and RAC Rally amongst others.

Stages To Victory - 1976 rallies with some good footage of the Sprint liveried Works TR7's.

I purchased all the above from http://www.ftvideo.co.uk/ - if you telephone the chap really knows what he's talking about. I just said I wanted footage of Works TR7's and he came up with the goods. At the time this was for possible use in 'Code Name Bullet' but ultimately only BMIHT were able to help.

Ya bvgger!

I suppose I should have pointed out that 'Buffum & Co.' has been shown full length at the last two TR Drivers Club national weekends. It has never been released on anything other than the original 16mm release prints struck in 1977/78. And there weren't many of 'em either.

Sounds as elusive as trying to find someone with a pedal car for sale...Sure would be nice to see it once though. I even contacted John Buffum....and he doesn't have a copy.

I got his book and I am pretty sure it was sent by him and was autographed. An excellent read. "In Like a Lamb Out Like a Lion"

Well if anyone fancies a trip to sunny Cornwall I'll always be more than happy to put 'Buffum & Co.' on for you in the cinema. Sorry I can't make copies of this one but it's not my copyright. I just got permission to use a couple of extracts.

Too bad you couldn't get permission to show it on the television.
That would be worth setting the recorder...for home use only...
