Aley roll bars....
how rare are these things you dont see them for sale very often and when you do they reach good money the one on ebay that finished yesterday reached £205 a little more than i thought it would or is this a good price for one
i wouldn't mind oe myself only i wasn't planning on spending that much.....

It wouldn't be the first time I've seen items sold above their retail price on ebay

Looks like i had a result last year, paid £120 for one of Fleabay still with wrapper on [:)] in fact [:D] [:D].
I am sure it stiffens a DHC body shell for sure not to mention the saftey aspect as well.
Easy enough to fit, you either have to weld 4 captive nuts in place below the hood mounting points or i used rivnuts. The top part mounts with nuts and bolts but one is located above the tank on N/S not easy to get too [V]

£200+ is nothing when you look at like that.....
i know there not everyones cup of tea but i happen to like them.
i also wouldn't mind a chrome boot rack as well no wood just metal and a bolt on type not the suction cup ones.
when the hell do you stop thinking about spending money on these things lol.............

It was one of the main attractions to the car I bought - it has an Aley bar fitted. I feel it must stiffen up the rear of my drophead - it does however make hood erection slightly more difficult, and it then rubs slightly on the rear window. I've been meaning to make a soft cover for the tube - but of course there's never enough time !
I DO like the extra security feeling - although I feel it must take a lot to invert a TR7!

BMC, is that an Aley cage? I always thought that they were the 'double tube' type which formed a narrow 'A' with a vynyl cover(like mine if you can see it in the pic). The rear tube bolts down through the rear shelf either side of the tank and the front tube goes to the floor with a side plate which bolts into an existing welded nut in the side pillar behind the door. I am sure it does strengthen the car as I never get the shakes (mirror or scuttle) described by others despite a slightly crumbly and dubious core to the car.
I also appeciate the saftey aspect (which is why I have kept mine), but think the cars look better without.

Having rolled over in a TR4 once and being surprised at how easy it was to achieve I was very pleased to find that my V8 was fitted with one from Grinnall. Does give you piece of mind, especially in the Fens where I live most roads have deep ditched either side and the majority of accidents locally end up in a roll [:(]

I actually like the way the car looks with the roll bar to be honest and the hod fits ok on mine. It does however restrict rearward vision a little.

I hate to spoil your "safety" talk here, but roll bars on "low-top" seats are NOT safe! They might help you if you experience a roll-over, but they can also seriously hurt you if you get rear-ended, even at a relatively low speed (10-20mph differential). And what do you think is more likely to happen?

You ether need a high top seat or a roll bar padding AND a helmet... Only one is practical on a street car [;)]

bmcecosse, do you have photos of how this bar attaches to the bottom of the car?

Yes - it IS an Aley bar -still has the stickers. But it is the earlier type and not covered in any way, as you can see.
No sorry - no pics of how it attaches - and i've just re-carpeted the car so all hidden now! But as described eleswhere, the tubes come down and rest along side the body re-inforcing section on each side of the car and a hefty plate lies on that section and is bolted to it - i'm guessing the nuts must have been welded in - but they can't be seen, being hidden by the plate. That re-inforcing section will do much to hold the bar steady in event of a rear-ending, although the bar is well forward of the rear of the car anyway, and let's face it - the fuel tank will have been pulverised and the contents set alight before the roll bar gets squahed into the passenger compartment!
