5-Speed Oil Pump

I am going to be installing a 5-speed gearbox in my FHC and it has been suggested that I replace the oil pump as a precaution. From the exploded drawings I have seen it looks like some dismantling of the gearbox is required to get at the pump.
Just wondering how difficult it is to get at, and if it is worthwhile, or should I just take my chances. I don't fancy having to wrestle with that heavy lump any more than necessary so once it is in place I would like to leave it there!

Thanks,
Rich

You'll only have to remove the alloy extension case to get at the pump.Make sure you also renew the little "O" ring (UKC7) in the hole were the selector rod enters the extension case.
You probably only have to renew the gears inside the pump, they can be purchased seperately (RTC 2057)

I think there are 'thick' and 'thin' oil pump gears for different ages of the LT77 box. And note - because of these gears and the forced lubrication round this box - the car can't be towed any distance or the box may seize up!

Good advice, Thanks Chaps!
I will order up the parts. I didn't want to get into a complete rebuild but I am sure I can handle that job.

Cheers,
Rich

Edit: Parts ordered. Of course impulse buying took over and I dropped 100 Quid on all sorts of bits and pieces. Looks like the front suspension rebuild will be starting sooner than expected!

If it's an original TR7 5 speed 'box, there's only one pump gear kit listed. but it's well possible that your 'box originates from another car (SD1). So worth checking.

As for towing the 5 speeder, they can be towed just like any other rear wheel driven car. So don't tow it all the way from LE to JOG [:p]
This fabel is probably introduced by a printing error in a later TR7 owners manual were they copied the text for the automatic gearbox to the manual paragraph. But have a look at the same paragraph in the TR7 Sprint manual and you won't see. Even the Land Rover manuals (they also had LT77 'boxes) don't mention any of this, it applies only for auto 'boxes.

Thanks Beans! It is a TR7 box, so no worries.

Unlikely it would be a SD1 (known as the Rover 3500 over here) as they are scarce as hen's teeth. I've only seen 2 or 3 at Victoria's car show, only one shows up at ours. Can't recall about Vancouver's. Interestingly amongst the original booklets that came with the TR7, that I still have, one about the fuel injection was the one for the Rover 3500.
