fuel cap vented

I am asking this on behalf of a fellow triumph owner TR8. He had lost his fuel cap and purchased one from Victoria British. When arrived it was a vented one. Question can this be changed to a non vented, if not who can supply one. A locking one would be prefered.

US spec non-locking ones are non-vented while the locking ones are vented for some reason, go figure.

Could someone please explain that difference is to the engine?

I have a carberated 1980 TR8. My cap is not stock and is vented.

This is just my opinion and I'm sure someone will correct me on this if I'm wrong. The vented/non-vented cap doesn't affect the engine per se, but rather affects whether your car can pass the smog test as we have here in Kalifornistan (aka California) with its strict regulations. Vented caps won't pass smog while the non-vented will.

Non vented were shipped to N/A, vented to UK. Not sure about other locations. If you get your cap from UK it's vented(I believe locking caps come from there.) A friend put a vented cap on his after he forgot it at gas station (diappeared). He could smell gas fumes after that until he got a used non vented off eBay. The fuel line plumbing is different, the idea behind non-vented is to prevent raw gas fumes entering the atmosphere. (and this was even before Al Gore could spell Global Warming). Non vented caps need another method to let in air to gas tank to replace used gasoline.

He was told by a very good ex leyland mechanic that it could possible damage the emission equipent.
I will pass on the info on a non lock cap

This is my locked cap, its not vacuum closed there is going a little air trough the lock.

Does the lock cap fit an early TR7 filler?
